1984: Propaganda Project
To close our study of Orwell’s 1984, you are going to play the role of a supreme propagandist.
You are to focus on developing an understanding of how ideas and images are used to persuade
people to believe, feel, or act in certain ways. Each of us faces propaganda every minute of the
day in the form of various images, pictures, and advertisements.
Step 1: Analysis of Originals
Due: ____________
Let’s start with basic propaganda in the form of advertisements. From magazines, I have a ton
for you to look through, select two ads that you find are effective at persuading people to buy the
product or to act upon whatever the subject the ad is about. Be sure to pay attention to how the
artist uses the following: color, typestyle, images, fonts, and diction to persuade people.
1. “Read” through the different ads to find the two you find to be most effective. Take your time
when doing this!
2. For each ad complete the following analysis:
1. Overview: In taking a first look at this ad, what is the subject?
2. Parts: What are the individual elements of this ad? Look at the font, color, people,
images, etc. List details of the items.
3. Title: Read the text of the ad. What information does this give to the audience?
4. Interrelationships: How do the answers written in questions 1, 2, and 3 contribute to the
overall message and purpose of this ad? What is the effect on the audience as a result of
all of these elements put together?
5. Conclusion: What is the message the ad is telling the audience? What is the purpose of
this ad? Why?
6. Which propaganda techniques are used in these ads? (Look back over your notes). How
are these techniques used?
This last one is to be completed using both ads.
7. Using a t-chart or venn diagram, compare and contrast both ads, specifically referring to
the ways in which they are similar and different. Then, in one 10 sentence paragraph
response, which ad is more effective and why.
Step Two: Your Propaganda Poster
Due: ____________
This part of the project is very similar to how Life Magazine and Benetton Clothing use the
David Kirby photograph to create an awareness of HIV and AIDS in the early 1990’s. So you
want to find a photograph that encompasses pathos on some level to appeal to your audience.
1. You need to look at various photographs or images from the following websites:
Life Magazine - http://www.life.com/
Time Magazine - http://lightbox.time.com/
2. As you browse through these images, you need to look for a photograph that you can
connect to some issue that you want people to either be aware of, take action for, or take
action against. Once you have found your image, you need to develop a “poster” of some
kind using Word, Power Point, or any other software you are comfortable using to
manipulate this image, so it works for your purpose and intentions. You must develop a
slogan for this purpose that uses one of the propaganda techniques mentioned in the
introduction lecture.
3. Once you have created your “poster,” please complete the written explanation that must
be typed, using MLA formatting. You do not need to retype the questions, but do label each
answer with the correct letter for the question. Answer the questions below in complete
sentences.
a) What did you try to persuade people to do? (e.g., do, believe, feel, etc.)
b) Who was your primary audience?
c) What is your intention for using pathos as you created your poster? How do you hope
your audience emotionally responds to your finished poster?
d) Why did you select this particular image? What attracted you to use this one over all
the others?
e) What special features, like fonts, font size, and font color, did you use to complete
your project? Please be specific with your references to your poster and explain your
reason for selecting these various elements.
f) Which propaganda technique does your poster use? Why do you feel this was the best
approach?
g) To what extent does/would your project succeed in persuading people? Why do you
think that?
Step Three: Presentation
Due: ____________
The presentation is going to be brief, but must include the following…
1) Showing of your poster
2) Interact with audience to quiz them (so you may want to develop questions for them to
answer) on your poster’s:
a. goal (motive/objective)
b. propaganda technique used
c. emotional reaction (pathos) to poster
d. overall effectiveness of your poster in persuasion
e. and any other items from the written explanation
3) Close your presentation in a persuasive manner that encourages your audience to follow
through with your goal.
