Essential Questions


How does representing functions graphically help you solve a system of equations?
How does writing equivalent equations help you solve a system of equations?
Enduring Understandings
1. To solve a system of equations, find a set of values that replace the variables in the
equations and make each equation true.
2. You can solve a system of equations by writing equivalent systems until the value on one
variable is clear. Then substitute to find the values of the other variables.
3. You can solve a system of inequalities in more than one way. Graphing the solution is
usually the most appropriate method. The solution is the set of all points that are solutions
of each inequality in the system.

A-CED 3. Represent constraints by equations or inequalities, and by systems of equations
and/ or inequalities, and interpret solutions as viable or nonviable options in a modeling
context.
A-REI 5. Prove that, given a system of two equations in two variables, replacing one
equation by the sum of that equation and a multiple of the other produces a system with
the same solutions.
A-REI 6. Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately, focusing on pairs
of linear equations in two variables.
A-REI 11. Explain why the x-coordinate of the points where the graphs of y=f(x) and y
=g(x) intersect are the solutions of the equation f(x)=g(x); find the solutions
approximately, or find successive approximations.
