Mythology Test, Study Sheet The following should remind you of the different myths for which you will be responsible. Page numbers indicate the start page for these assignments. If you have lost your packets, the book often has the same stories with mostly the same details. It has an index as well as a table of contents that you might use to review. (You may also check with me to see if I have extra handouts.) You may use your archetypal cards on the test. You may also use my cardstock info., which covers the Olympians, the Titans, and a few minor characters. Students will take their test in class in small groups (or individually if anyone prefers); there is an optional take-home essay as well. Students may have index cards of hand-written notes (or typed—if they turn them in to me at least one day before the test). They may not, however, copy and paste info. from the computer or use handouts or books on the test. Groups will be composed of a maximum of 4 people. Students without note cards may not join groups where students have note cards (and archetypal cards or my cardstock information does not count as writing cards). A min. of 57 decent note cards is enough to join a group who has done note cards. For the test, students will be asked to sign an honesty declaration affirming that they have honestly taken the test according to the guidelines. This would include only using the materials allowed and also not speaking with other students who have already taken the test about the test. For the Olympians, know symbols, animals, cities, and spouses (at least the important ones). For the heroes, know the main events, births and deaths, side characters (such as spouses and parents), villains, and objects involved with the different heroes (such as Hercules having to gain the girdle of Hippolyta [Amazon queen’s], cleaning out the Aegean stables, wearing the lion’s fur after slaying him, killing the hydra, etc.). You might also try and apply the hero’s quest for 1-2 of our heroes. Archetypes Be able to apply them to the different myths (such as “call to action,” “threshold guardian,” mentor, large obstacle, boons, etc.). You might also use hero types or the white packet (such as “descent to the underworld,” “damsel in distress,” “into the belly of the beast,” etc.). Holidays/Cultural Days (few questions for each) (You may want to read up on them on Wikipedia. For some, there are articles or powerpoints on my website.) Labor Day Halloween Friday the 13th Thanksgiving St. Lucia—possibly (If we discuss it in class first.) Think of questions that were asked on quizzes; they could come up again. There will be quite a few extra credit questions, so that should help if the test proves difficult. It is a lot of information; therefore, I suggest reviewing the material and spending some decent time on it. There will be a lot of questions, so the better you know the material, the faster you’ll be able to tackle the questions, and the more successful you will be. Finishing the test on time has been an issue for some groups because they don’t know their material well enough. Questions will include multiple choice, true/false, matching, short answer, fill-in-theblank, etc. The majority of the questions are fill-in-the-blank. There is also a take-home, optional essay. There are approx. 180-200 questions on the test, and the test will be worth 200-250 points. If people study hard, come prepared with cards, and work together, they usually do well. Here are a few practice questions (which likely won’t be on the test, but might be, and they also should provide a sense of the type of questions I’ll ask). 1. Fill in the blanks below. Gr. Name Rm. Name Domain Marriage Symbol XXX Myrtle Tree Animal City/Location 2. Fill in the blanks: ________________ Aphrodite’s main lover (a god) ________________ All but one killed their husbands at a post-wedding dinner. ________________ The river of forgetfulness (in the Underworld) ________________ She was the goddess of orchards and didn’t want to marry at first ________________ She was a good daughter and sister; she may have been killed for her kindness in burying her brother’s body. ________________ Apollo gave him donkey ears ________________ the god/goddess associated with the Oracle of Delphi ________________ He fed the gods human flesh ________________ Identify the person in the slide (or the overhead) Name 6 of Hercules’s labors: What are two of Psyche’s quests and what is a lesson from her story? Name one of the kings of Athens and one of the kings of Thebes, and tell something important about each of these cities. Give an example of the great importance of hospitality in Greek culture. How did the Sphinx cause problems for Thebes and how was the problem of the Sphinx taken care of? Name some of the heroes and gods on each side of the Trojan War (i.e., Who was on the Greek side? Who was on the Trojan side?) What is a word/name from Greek mythology that has meaning today? Explain the connection. (For example, Ceres is the Roman name for Demeter, the goddess of grain, and cereal is a breakfast food made of grain.)
