SHSW Technology Fund - Website Publication Template Information Project title / reference Project Overview Key Dates Description SHSW – 0565 Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Management Project SWAST currently uses a paper based system of medicines management. The paper based system is used to ensure compliance with controlled drug legislation, maintain an audit trail of drug distribution and prescription, stock control and reconciliation, and financial management. Furthermore there are currently two paper based systems in the Trust since the merger between Great Western and South Western Ambulance Trusts. An electronic medicines management system would greatly enhance the functionality of the current system and would allow interoperability by interfacing with other systems including an interface with the electronic patient record system, the C3 system (monitoring and audit) and the UCS Adastra system (stock control and controlled drug monitoring), and interface with the Datix system for monitoring issues with medicines. The functionality of the electronic system would also allow controlled drug spot checks by managers, the regulator and NHS Security Management. Access to applications and information will make them more effective, provide more time for patient care, reduce clinical risk and support a higher quality and more joined up service. Project Overview Key Dates Implementation Cost 2 Currently the recording of information at vehicle level is paper-based; forms need to be filled in with carbon copies which go back to the Trust for digitisation. This initiative would remove paper from the ambulance and allow digitisation; it would also integrate multiple data sources to increase the productivity of front-line staff. The tablet would allow access to the following types of information: Patient’s clinical record or summary care record Vehicle and Medical Equipment checks Medicine stock checks Directory of Services Triage tool and NHS Pathways Advanced scheduling information E-learning Clinical guidelines Crew performance statistics Email The tablet would allow two way dialogue, enabling the front-line staff to communicate their status, vehicle condition, medicines status and allow face to face communication with clinicians for better triaging.
