Name ________________________________ Hour ______ Food Web Worksheet Identify the: 1. Producers 2. First-level Consumers 3. Second-level Consumers 4. Third-level Consumers 5. Herbivores 6. Carnivores 7. Omnivores 8. What elements are missing from this food web? A biome is a group of land ecosystems with similar climates and organisms. The six major biomes that most ecologists study are the rain forest, desert, grassland, deciduous forest, boreal forest, and tundra. Tropical Rain Forest – Tropical rainforests are found in regions close to the equator. The climate is warm and humid all y ear long, and there is a lot of rain. Desert – Deserts receive less than 25 centimeters of rain per year. They often undergo large shifts in temperature during the course of a day. Grassland – Grasslands are areas that are populated mostly by grasses and other non-woody plants. Most grasslands receive 25 to 75 centimeters of rain each year. Fires and droughts are common in this biome. Deciduous Forest – Deciduous forests contain deciduous trees, which are trees that shed their leaves and grow new ones each year. They receive enough rain to support the growth of trees and other plants, at least 50 centimeters each year. Temperatures in the deciduous forest vary greatly during the year. Boreal Forest – Most of the trees in the boreal forest are coniferous trees, trees that produce their seeds in cones and have leaves shaped like needles. Winters in these forests are very cold, and summers are rainy and warm. Tundra – The tundra is an extremely cold and dry biome, and it may receive no more precipitation than a desert. Most of the soil in the tundra is frozen all year long; this frozen soil is called permafrost. Choose one of the above biomes: _______________________________________________ Producers (at least 4) Consumers (at least 8) Decomposers (at least 2) 1. Use the organisms from your biome to create a food chain which includes at least 3 organisms. Be sure to include the names of the organisms and which energy role they fill (producer, first-level consumer, etc.). 2. Now use the organisms from your biome to create an energy pyramid which includes at least 4 organisms. Include the name and a picture of each organism, which energy role they fill, and how much energy is available at each level. 3. Finally, use the organisms from your biome to create a food web which includes at least 10 organisms. Be sure to include names of the organisms and energy flow arrows (pointing in the correct direction).
