WELCOME MESSAGES
On behalf of the Board of
Directors of Pine Tree Players I’d
like to welcome you to our 2017
One Act Play Production. A large
team of dedicated volunteers
have been madly working to pull
this production together. They
deserve kudos for all their efforts.
Also a huge thank you to our
sponsors and to you, the
audience for supporting
community theatre in the Bow
Valley. We couldn’t do it without
you-Marsha Wright, President
Welcome all to the 2017 One Act
Play Festival! This is the first year
in some time it has been staged
independent of our spring
production. It is our hope the
success of the festival will allow
that independence to continue
and become a PTP tradition. My
aim this year was to keep it
simple, have fun and attract new
plays and people. That has
already made the festival a
success. Thanks to the PTP Board
for giving the go ahead to the
festival, and to the many
volunteers and front line actors
and directors. Enjoy, laugh a lot
and tell your friends about itGerry McAuley, Artistic Director

Marcus Williams (Hamlet)This awkwardly-handsome,
slightly gingered, young actor’s acting resume has quickly
Figments while at SAIT, he didn’t take to the stage again until
joining the Mountain Improv Alliance (M.I.A) in Canmore.
From there, he joined Pine Tree Players for their One Act
Plays last spring. This past Holiday Season he portrayed Bob
Cratchit in Conquest Theatre’s production of Scrooge. His
most notable achievement was when the back of his head
was seen on the silver screen alongside, Leonardo DiCaprio
in The Revenant. When he is not acting, you can hear his
voice on the Bow Valley’s only local radio station, 106.5
Mountain FM, as Marcus Williams.
Heidi Books (Gertrude) made her debut with the Pine Tree
Players in Ladies at Lunch, performed at the 2015 Canmore
One Act Play Festival. Since then she has also performed in
the One Act Play, My Narrator in the 2016 Regional One Act
Play festival. My Narrator went on to represent Canmore in
the ADFA Provincial Finals held in Grand Prairie last year.
Heidi balances her theatrical interest with her professional
career in Human Resources and raising her two young
children.
Marilu Adams (Ruby)This is Marilu’s first appearance in a
Pine Tree Players production, despite a desire to get back to
the theatre for a while. Balancing a young family and a busy
career, she has, however, managed to fit in some local theatre
with her children: In 2015 Marilu starred in the Conquest
Theatre’s Scrooge bringing humour to her 3 roles , in 2014
Motus O’ Dance Production of Alice in Wonderful at the
Banff Centre, and in 2013 in a Christmas Carol, again with
Motus O’ . Marilu was very involved with amateur dramatics
in her youth in the UK and a member of LAMDA – London
Academy of Music& Dramatic Arts. She is enjoying being
back on stage.
BIOs for RUBY OF ELSINORE
Nina St. James (Director) A multi-talented and valued
member of Pine Tree Players (PTP), Nina directed the One
Act Play Ladies @ Lunch in the spring of 2015. She was a
Producer and Backstage Manager for the immensely successful
ADFA Regional One Act Play Festival which was hosted by
PTP in April 2016. As a Director at Large, Nina is the
Volunteer Co-coordinator for PTP. She has taught young
Canmore actors, between the ages of 5 – 12, how to create
characters and be a part of the theatre culture, since 2015.
Watch out for her inaugural Production for Young Audiences
in April 2017 featuring The Pine Cones, PTP’s youth acting
group. Nina is the talent and energy behind “breakAway
Theatre” and “It’s Showtime!” Acting Classes.
Jessica Campbell (Ophelia) made her debut in with Pine Tree
Players in Mending Fences in 2015. Since then, she has
appeared in The Lemonade Stand in the One Act Play Festival
in the Spring of 2016. Jessica is very excited to play Ophelia, as
it is her first attempt at comedy. Jessica was bitten by the
acting bug at the age of 12 in Nova Scotia. So after a hiatus of
20 something years, Jessica listened to her heart and is trying
something new.
Steve Fedyna (Ghost) made his acting debut in 1989 in the
role of Santa Claus at the kids’ Christmas party at work. Since
then, he appeared in the tragi-comic role of Chief Information
Officer at Husky Energy. Steve has appeared many times
locally as part of the Mountain Improv Alliance comedy
group. He is also the chair of the Rocky Mountain Section of
the Alpine Club of Canada and volunteers teaching public
speaking and job interview techniques at the local high schools.
BIOs for RUBY OF ELSINORE
Jonathan Simpson (Claudius) Jonathan is a traveler from
Melbourne, Australia. Studying theatre and film, Jonathan
graduated from his Bachelor of Creative Arts (Drama) from
Deakin University 2016. Throughout university Jonathan
took part in many productions, culminating in his final year
co-devised performance of Yellow Socks, for which he won the
Industry Standard Performance Award for an Individual,
granting him a full season’s access to the Melbourne Theatre
Company 2016 season. Honoured to be granted the award but
unable to reap the benefits as Jonathan was spending the
entirety of his 2016-17 in Canada. Recently moved to
Canmore after 8 months in Jasper, Jonathan is excited to act
for the first time in another country. Jonathan played Sir
Andrew Aguecheek in the Australian Shakespeare Company’s
2013 performance of Twelfth Night and Benvolio in Dionysus
Theatre Co. 2015 performance of Romeo & Juliet. Jonathan
has a passion for Shakespeare but is very much looking
forward to poking fun at the characters and melodrama that
PTP’s Ruby of Elsinore presents.

Hamlet- by William Shakespeare
The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, often shortened
to Hamlet, is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare at an
uncertain date between 1599 and 1602. Set in the Kingdom of
Denmark, the play dramatizes the revenge Prince Hamlet is
called to wreak upon his uncle, Claudius, by the ghost of
Hamlet's father, King Hamlet. Claudius had murdered his
own brother and seized the throne, also marrying his
deceased brother's widow Gertrude. Elsinore is the name of
the Danish royal castle. - Wikipedia.org

OUT TO LUNCH by Timothy Eckmier
Presented by The Banff Theatre Collective
A one act play Inspired by the vaudeville play, Mad Breakfast, by I. M.
Gray, rewritten by Timothy Eckmier as a modern and devised piece. Our
story is of a quaint boarding house, nestled comfortably in the Rocky
Mountains, run by the superintendents Mr and Mrs Grey. A stranger is set
to visit, and in his charge, Mr Grey decides to stir things up by creating
mysterious identities of the new guest. All hilarity ensues when the
stranger finally arrives. Through his visit, the boarders come to face some
of the dark secrets and unspoken memories that have been exposed from
the cracks and crags of times long past.

OUT TO LUNCH
Timothy Eckmier (The Narrator)Timothy is the
Creative Director for the Banff Theatre Collective. This
group was started as a passion project for Timothy as
he had been feeling dry in all things theatre in Banff.
Graduating from Humber College Theatre
Performance in Toronto, Timothy has called Banff his
home for four years and created the BTC one year ago.
He is looking forward to more somethings to come
from nothing in the future for Banff Theatre
Collective. He would like to thank his cast for trusting
in the process of the unknown and is looking forward
to presenting this piece.
Lena Fritzsching (Mrs Petunia Hill) Lena is from
Germany and has been involved in BTC for about 6
months now. Theatre allows her to act like she
normally wouldn't, which is fun. After she was focused
on her own nose as Rudolph the red nosed reindeer in
her first show with BTC, she is now focused on her
husband, Willyum's nose, who can "smell the spirits".
Adeodatus McCormack (The Stranger) Adeodatus is
from Adelaide, Australia and has been involved in
theatre ever since a young age. He has been involved in
productions for a number of companies, including
Unseen Theatre Company, AU Theatre Guild,
UrbanMyth Youth Company and the Adelaide
University French Club as well as numerous short
films and television programs. He looks forward to
continuing developing his theatre experience and
learning more from every production.
BIOs
OUT TO LUNCH
Marit Meissner (Dahlia Stern) Marit is from Berlin,
Germany. She has been involved with BTC for four
months. Out to Lunch is her second show with BTC.
As well as with her character of the innocent
dreaming Dahlia, she met a guy in real life, who
inspired her to travel the world.
Heidi Murdoch (Mrs Martha Grey)Heidi is from
Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario and has been involved
with the BTC for one year. She found her passion in
her career back home taking care of others as a
developmental services worker but was able to
indulge in her other passion of theatre in Banff.
Tyson Night (Professor Q Stern) Tyson Night is
from Saulteaux First Nations, Saskatchewan & has
been residing in Banff since the early spring months
of 2016. His passion for theatre, collective writing &
improvisation has been a part of his journeys since
he was young. Growing up, he competed in
numerous oratory contests, from reciting authors'
poetries to writing his own authentic pieces of
poems, speeches & short stories. His eagerness for
theatre & performing is a way to step out of his
comfort zone and express himself. He performed
with Saskatchewan Native Theatre Co. in Bye Bye
Beneshe and was considered with Persephone
Theatre in Saskatoon. “I believe life is not about
finding yourself but recreating from who you’ve
become. It’s about opportunity & growing with it.”
BIOs
OUT TO LUNCH
Tom J Smith (Mr Willyum Hill) Born and raised in
Yorkshire, England and with the company for five
months. Tom has worked in multiple productions
throughout his life, with most of that being
Shakespeare. Tom plays Mr Hill, one of the more
eccentric characters at the boarding house and
definitely not crazy. When not acting Tom can be
found on the slopes, often taking extra time on his
favourite run, Trappers.
Sophie Tzschabran (Miss Anafred Tilly) Rabea
Sorka Sophie Tzschabran comes from Germany
where she has experienced presenting abstract theatre
pieces before. She'd claim that you change with the
peculiar caracters you play but it still reminds you of
real life...or easily: "Das Theater ist die tätige Reflexion
des Menschen über sich selbst" - Novalis. This is her
first show with BTC.
John Woolaver (Mr Bartholomew Grey)John is
from Halifax, Nova Scotia. He has been involved with
the BTC for a year now making new friends and
helping community theatre grow in Banff. John
works for Parks Canada during the day as his secret
identity.
About Banff Theatre Collective
We are a collective group of new-found friends who meet
together to explore, play, create, and share the theatre
experience in Banff. We are building a like-minded energetic
community to create theatre and share information of arts and
entertainment events in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. We
offer free drop-in classes and theatre games nights as a
BanffLIFE program in the Town of Banff every Sunday night
at 5pm above Banff Public Library.
About the Show
Out to Lunch was created as a devised theatre piece using a
basic idea and a few lines from Mad Breakfast, by I.M. Gray.
Names were changed, characters were cut and added, and side
stories were created in a series of vignettes and small physical
theatre pieces that link these characters together and tell their
story. The play was written by Timothy Eckmier to merge the
stories of Mr and Mrs Grey and their boarding house
boarders, and their community. We didn't know exactly how
the show would take shape as we created it. We didn't start
with a finalized script but with ideas for scenes and transitions
to link them together. Our work is representative of physical
theatre, as a collective, creating a story with all of the cast
members involved in the process of finding the characters.
We're excited to share this brand new play with you, and we
hope you enjoy a taste of something different.

ST. FRANCIS PREACHES TO THE BIRDS
by David Ives
In the desert of Umbria, two precocious vultures Angela and Mike
have a bone to pick with the venerated St. Francis of Assisi, founder
of the Franciscan order and renowned for his life of piousness and
poverty. St. Francis has the miraculous ability to speak to birds,
which makes for a lively discussion on death, heaven and the
consequences of one’s life decisions.

ST. FRANCIS PREACHES TO THE BIRDS
Lukas Matthews (Mike the Vulture)Hailing originally from
Ontario, Lukas has worked seasonally (summers) in the Bow
Valley since 2011, but only properly moved to Banff
permanently in 2015 after his first winter "Out West". (Took
him long enough to acknowledge that
"once you go West, you never go back.") Prior to this past
autumn, he'd been away from the stage for three and a half
years, but thankfully found his way back via Banff Theatre
Collective (playing Comet the Reindeer in BTC's Christmas
Improv Special), and now with Pine Tree Players for these
One Acts. If it isn't clear already, he's ever so delighted to be
involved in the theatre scene once again.
Megan Dunn (Angela the Vulture)Megan ended up in
Canmore 10 years ago, when she ran away to the mountains
and found she was unable to bring herself to leave. She is
familiar with the stage as a player with The Mountain
Improv Alliance and is appearing in the short film Stay,
written and directed by Canmore local Mike
Yudkovitch. When she’s not cavorting about on a stage she
enjoys spending ludicrous amounts of time on a bicycle and
eating Nutella straight from the jar. She is excited to be in
her first role in a Pine Tree Players production.
Iain Lock (St. Francis)Originally from the UK, Iain has
lived in Canmore for four years after twenty years in
Vancouver in the travel industry as a product, planning and
marketing professional. He made his start in acting
appearing in Scrooge for another company Christmas 2015
and most recently appeared in the Pine Tree Players
production of God of Carnage. Iain is looking forward to
playing the ill-fated role of St. Francis preaching to the
vultures.

ST. FRANCIS PREACHES TO THE BIRDS
Melissa Clements (Grandmother) Melissa Clements has
participated in several Pine Tree Players productions
over the past 4 years. She played three different roles in
Streetcar Named Desire, a grief stricken matron that
assaults a dead man in Crossing the Bar, an arrogant
businessman trying to negotiate a peek at some boobs in
Controlling Interests, an embittered “daddy's girl” in The
Other Martha, for which she won an ADFA award for
Best Actress, an inept cop in Arsenic & Old Lace and a
love struck "dumb" waiter in Naked. She has also
participated on stage for Canmore's Mountain Improv
Alliance.
Gord Elser (Cactus) Gord has lived in Canmore for 13
years and works at Mountain FM. He is familiar with the
stage as a player with The Mountain Improv Alliance and
had leading role in the 10 minute short film Stay written
and directed by Canmore local Mike Yudocovitch. He is
excited to be in his first role in a Pine Tree Players
production.
Ron Deans (Director) Ron is delighted to be directing
the one-act comedy, St. Francis Preaches to the Birds by
playwright David Ives. The play portrays St. Francis of
Assisi, the patron saint of animals, with a pair of vultures
in the desert prior to his death. Ron’s first opportunity to
direct was the one-act play Naked. He assisted in
direction of the recent production of God of Carnage.
Ron’s acting credits include Arsenic and Old Lace by
Joseph Kesselring as Dr. Einstein, The Other Martha by
Melanie DesRoches as Henry, and in The Death of Me by
Norm Foster as the Doctor. Special thanks to Katja
Morgensen for all her invaluable help with the costumes
and props.
Who is St. Francis?
Born in Italy circa 1181 to a wealthy family, St. Francis of
Assisi was a renowned sinner, famous for drinking and
partying in his youth. He became a soldier, was captured
and spent nearly a year in prison. After his release, Francis
heard the voice of Christ, who told him to repair the
Christian Church and live a life of extreme poverty.
Consequently, he abandoned his life of luxury and began
preaching around Assisi.
In the quest for spiritual perfection, Francis was soon
preaching in up to five villages per day, teaching a new
kind of emotional and personal Christian religion that
everyday people could understand. Francis' embrace of
Christ-like poverty was a radical notion at the time. The
Christian church was tremendously rich, which concerned
Francis, who felt that the long-held apostolic ideals had
eroded. Francis set out on a mission to restore Jesus
Christ's own, original values to the now-decadent church.
garnered criticism from some and earned him the
nickname "God's fool." But Francis's message was spread
far and wide, and thousands of people were captivated by
what they heard. His followers became known as
Franciscan friars.
Francis of Assisi died on October 3, 1226, at the age of 44,
in Assisi, Italy. He was canonized as a saint just two years
after his death, on July 16, 1228, by his former protector,
Pope Gregory IX. He is the patron saint for ecologists—a
title honoring his boundless love for animals and nature. In
2013, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergogli chose to honor St.
Francis by taking his name, becoming Pope Francis.biography.com
HOUSE OF THE HOLY MOMENT
by Cary Pepper
With no property taxes on houses of worship, the town of Appleton
(population 3,000) now has a total of 300 churches, including the
Second Coming Car Service, and Messiah Mike’s House of Stereo.
It’s no surprise that the town’s tax base is eroding. Henrietta Billings,
City Tax Assessor, is visiting every church in town to determine that
each is a legitimate house of worship. This Sunday, Henrietta walks
into the House of the Holy Moment, run by Butch Haggerty, whose
idea of a church is very different from what the city fathers had in
mind.

HOUSE of the HOLY MOMENT
Gerry McAuley (Butch, Director) Back on stage for the
first time since Mending Fences, Gerry is excited to be both
acting and directing newcomer Theresa Thiessen and old
pro Jeremy White in House of the Holy Moment. A 12 year
Canmore resident originally from Montreal, Gerry has
been involved with PTP for almost 10 years; from
stagehand, bartender, actor, director and now artistic
director for Wholly Comedy.
Theresa Thiessen (Henrietta) Born and raised in Calgary,
Alberta, Theresa studied acting and graduated in Kelowna
BC where she met and married her husband Marvin. In the
early 80's they moved to Manitoba to start a family and
manage a family-run truck stop. The year the youngest of
their two children graduated Theresa began a 15 year career
with West Jet Airlines. Canmore has been home for
Theresa and Marvin for 12 years. She is one of Pine Tree
Players' newest members.
Jeremy White (Charlie) Jeremy White hails originally
from Toronto. He previously performed in the Pine Tree
productions Mending Fences and My Narrator. He says,
"One great thing about this event is how there are so many
people involved. The casts of each play, plus the directors,
stage manager, producers, tech and the front of house all
come together to put on the event. Everyone's helping each
other and cheering each other on. It's a terrific atmosphere."
From convent to chorus line:
Dis-orderly “Nuns” in the spotlight April 19-29
Nunsense, the Musical
by Dan Goggin
$25 Tickets for April 21 – 29 on-line at EventBrite or at the door
Join Mother Superior and her talented troupe of nuns for a comical
evening of singing, dancing and unforgettable convent humour at
Nunsense, the Musical, Pine Tree Players’ spring production April 19
– 29. The Little Sisters (well, some of them are small) of Hoboken are
hilariously in habit but completely out of order in PTP’s rollicking
performance of Nunsense, the Musical by Dan Goggin. Leave your
cloistered thoughts at home and get ready for buffoonery (Mother
Superior was in a high wire act??), a chorus line with attitude (the first
nun ballerina??) and cooking tips you won’t soon forget. When the
Sisters are on a roll, it’s comedy reaching critical mass!
Co-directors Elizabeth Green and Jessica Summers, and Musical
Director Ali Morrison are pulling out all the stops for an evening of
harmony, soft shoe and unrepentant fun …vow now to attend!
