3 sentences about your research topic. Circadian is a biological rhythm that cycle every 24 hours. The sleep wake-cycle is a circadian rhythm that is responsible for the production of melatonin, which is synthesized in the pineal gland. Other forms of biological rhythms are ultradian rhythms which cycle spontaneously, and infradian rhythms which cycle longer than a day. ************************ Altruistic behavior is defined as one acting in a way detrimental to itself for the betterment of the group. Rouseau and Hobbes are the two major groups on the issue. Rousseau backs nurture and Hobbes backs nature. The main study area for this topic is between apes and humans. Habituation is a learning process in which an animal learns to ignore a repeated, irrelevant stimulus. It is also one of the most fundamental learning processes that allows animals to adapt to dynamic environments. In domestic horses, selective breeding has led to an increase in the animal’s ability to habituate. Climate change’s biggest component is global warming Global warming involves gasses such as carbon dioxide and methane gas Climate change has a big effect on the creatures of the sea The climate of an area determines which animals will exist and thrive there. Climate affects ecosystems by causing organisms to move areas or try to adapt to the harsh conditions The human effect on the climate causes the ecosystems to be drastically altered. Such as global warming, this is causing many cold organisms to be affected. ************************ Operant conditioning is a means of shaping an animal through punishment and reward. Classical conditioning means to use automatic, involuntary responses to learn new behavior. Animals are more likely to repeat behavior that triggers reward than behavior that triggers punishment. Energy flow is a way for different classifications of organisms to obtain nutrients. The sun contains the maximum amount of energy available for an ecosystem. Trophic levels are feeding levels for organisms ************************ Chemical communication is done by secreting pheromones Chemical signals last for long periods of time and are specific Female mice can secrete a pheromone that can abort a fetus ************************ Species change gender due to its environment The primary reason species copulate is to have the species live on. Plumage, along with hormones, attract like species to propagate Freshwater is defined as having a low salt concentration, usually less 1%. Plants and animals in freshwater regions are adjusted to the low salt content and would not be able to survive in areas of high salt concentration like the ocean. Ponds and lakes, streams and rivers, and wetlands are the three main types of freshwater ecosystems. ************************ Tundra forests have a layer of permanently frozen ground, known as permafrost, present year round. Boreal forests have acidic soil and are commercially used by logging companies for the wood. Temperate deciduous forests have seasonality and are cultivated for agriculture. Parental care is any care given to the offspring by the parents that help increase the life of the offspring, Good parenting by animals is because the offspring are Altricial meaning they are helpless and require high parental care and are unable to care for themselves. Precocial offspring require little or non parental care because they are born with the instinct of knowing how to find food and avoid predators. Mutualism is a symbiotic relationship in which both partners benefit. Fanged Pitcher Plants use ants to break down their food. Spotted Salamanders have green algae living inside of them which allows them to gather energy from the sun. In situ conservation is when you keep animals in their natural environment. Animals that are in situ conservation is African wild dogs, Island Foxes and Giant Pandas. There are three different types of in situ conservation. Dances of honeybees can be classified into three broad forms: round dance, sickle dance and waggle dance. Waggle dance consists of two phases: waggle phase and return phase. The duration of waggle phase indicates the distance from the source, and one second represents one kilometer. A keystone species is any species that if removed from it’s environment, the ecosystem would slowly begin to fail. An example of a keystone species is a starfish. If a starfish was removed tidal pools and coral reefs would be endangered of being wiped out. ……………………. What are two types of competition? An example of interspecific competition An example of intraspecific competition ************************************************************************************* Grasslands occur naturally on all continents except Antarctica. The Sahara is one of the world’s largest deserts in Northern Africa. There are actually two seasons in a savanna; a very long dry season known as winter and a very wet season known as summer. It takes atleast 24 hours before cattle adapt to a new piece of land. Under normal weather conditions cattle will only venture about 1.6 km from their water source to find food. To maintain thermal balance, in cold weather cattle graze mostly during the nighttime and wont venture far from their bedding sight because they rely on their sight to find food.
