ROLE I divide my time equally between my academic work and the clinical care of patients on the busy intensive care unit at the Royal London Hospital. My central research interests are in improving clinical outcomes following major non-cardiac surgery and the cardiovascular management of critically ill and high-risk surgical patients. I have experience of a wide range of research methodologies including translational laboratory and clinical research, multi-centre observational and randomised trials and large epidemiological studies. My current focus is on large clinical studies in perioperative medicine. I am an active member of several national and international societies for anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. I was recently appointed the founding director of the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia UK Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network. I am active in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including co-director of the QMUL Critical Care Medicine MSc course.
