USES/INDICATIONS
(1) temporizing measures to optimize ventricular function while awaiting ventricular function
to return
(2) as bridging therapy to heart transplantation
(3) therapy if not eligible for cardiac transplantation
DESCRIPTION
- small tube that carries blood out of the heart -> into a pump -> blood pumped back into
the aorta
- can be flow rather than pulsatile
- may be right, left or biventricular
- either trancutaneous or implantable
- good control of cardiac output + left and right ventricular output
METHOD OF INSERTION AND/OR USE
- surgically placed
OTHER INFORMATION
- requires anticoagulation
- differentiating VAD from ECMO: flow and pump speed, shorter pipes, blood same colour
