WHAT POT SIZE IS SUFFICIENT?
Give plants some type of support as they are climbers.
A
trellis, wire cage, netting or stakes work well. You may
intertwine or wrap them around each other and/or your
means of support. They can also be grown in a hanging
basket. An eight to ten inch pot makes a nice specimen.
CAN THEY GROW INSIDE YEAR ROUND?
Not year round. The point is they like a change in day to
night temperatures to grow and bloom properly. When
temperatures drop below 45 degrees in the autumn, bring
your plants inside. If you live where nights rarely drop below
45 degrees, you can leave your plants outside year round.
HOW DO I MOVE MY PLANTS INSIDE IN AUTUMN?
In cold winter areas you must move these inside to prevent
freezing. Mandevilla is not easily movable if they have been
climbing and twisting around a permanent structure outside.
Do not despair. Just cut away whatever you need to in order
to bring plants inside. New growth will come back 3 times as
much.
IS PRUNING NECESSARY?
Prune to remove old wood and to shape the bush is best
done in late winter. Flowers appear only on new wood so
pruning is beneficial to promote more flowers.
MY PLANT LOST IT LEAVES.
If you leave it outside in the fall too late and temperatures
drop below 40 to 45F, some of the leaves will probably fall
away. Bring them back inside and the leaves will grow back. If
they do lose their leaves, you should cut them back to about
two thirds of their size. They also defoliate somewhat in the
winter as well.
IS FERTILIZING NECESSARY?
Yes. Mandevilla respond to regular weekly feeding or
bi-weekly feeding.

When your plant arrives from Roberta’s, remove from the
shipping box immediately.
Remove plastic bag and/or sleeve from around potted
plant(s). Discard any packing material clinging to the leaves
or soil. Pull away any yellow or brown leaves that may have
occurred during transit. If you can not plant it into garden or
larger pot within a few days, make sure it stays well watered.
When ready to plant, do the job as early in the day as
possible to avoid extreme soil temperatures that prevent
proper water uptake from the roots. Water them in well and
whisper a few words of wisdom.

PLANT PREPARATION

POTTED PLANTS
Repot the plants into larger 10 to 12 inch pots separately.
You can transplant gradually one pot size per year up to 20
inches in diameter.
SOIL
Mandevilla will tolerate a wide range of soil types as long
as they are well drained and fertile.
GARDEN PREPARATION
If your soil is clayish amend it with a standard garden soil
for adequate drainage.
PLANTING SPACING
If planting into the garden space them 5 feet apart. If
planting into a container allow for adequate air ventilation
on deck or patio.
PLANT HEIGHT AND WIDTH
These will grow up to maximum of 4 to 6 feet tall and
wide.
WATER
Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain
through the bottom of the pot. Be sure to keep excess
water out of any tray underneath pot. Keep moist, during
the spring and summer repeating twice a week all summer
long. Water less in winter allowing the soil to dry a little.
FERTILIZER
To promote more flowers use a well balanced fertilizer like
Roberta’s Flower Magic Plant Food (M7503) twice a month
April through October.
LIGHTING
Full or partial sun is best outside in summer. In the winter
inside the home, bright light is sufficient.
BLOOMING
In most cases, they will bloom the first season in summer
through fall. After that bloom every year in spring through
fall.
TEMPERATURE ZONE 9 to 11
In pots, these are hardy down to about 35F without
damaging the plant permanently. They prefer to stay
above 45F.
WINTER SEASON
Bring inside a frost free area and give as much light as
possible. Some leaves will fall away.
PRUNING
