2016 Broward Regional Health Planning Council Broward Sexually Transmitted Infections Quick Facts Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major health concern in the United States. These infections have serious health implications for the entire population. Many times the symptoms and consequences are more severe for women who may even pass the disease to their baby if they are infected during pregnancy. STIs caused by bacteria or parasites (like chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea) may be treated through a healthcare provider; however, viral infections (such as HIV/AIDS) currently have no cure; instead they have medication that can help keep the disease under control.
