Plant Processes Study Guide
Vocabulary Words
* embryo:
embryo the tiny plant inside a seed
* germinate:
germinate to sprout as a seed does
* stamen:
stamen the make part of a flower
* cotyledons:
cotyledons the structures where food is stored in seeds
* vegetative propogation:
propogation a form of asexual reproduction without seeds
* tissue culture:
culture process that grows plants artificially in laboratories
* pistil:
pistil the female part of a flower
* seedling:
seedling the stage when a germinated seeds begins growing and making its own food
* grafting:
grafting a form of artificial reproduction that can produce desirable characteristics in woody
plants
* fertilization:
fertilization the joining of a male reproductive cell with a female reproductive cell
* ovary:
ovary the prtion of a flower, at the base of the pistil, that contains the eggs
* tropism:
tropism a plant's response to a stimulus
* epidermis:
epidermis the outer layer of cells of a leaf
* cellular respiration:
respiration the process by which the cells release the energy in food to carry on life processes
* phototropism:
phototropism a plant's response to light
* palisade layer:
layer the layer of cells in a leaf where most photosynthesis occurs
* photosynthesis:
photosynthesis the process by which plants make food
* gravitropism:
gravitropism a plant's response to gravity
Plant Processes Study Guide
Important Ideas
* Plant process: Water is transported from the root to the leaf.
* Plant process: Carbon dioxide enters the leaf through the stomata.
* Plant Process: Water and oxygen is released through the stomata.
* Plant process: Glucose is transported from the leaf back to the root.
* Be able to label the parts of a plant on a diagram: anther, pistil, stigma, eggs, style, petal, ovary, and
stamen.
* Stomata are opened and closed by guard cells.
* During cellular respiration, plants use oxygen and glucose.
* There are three kinds of tropism: gravitropism, phototropism, and touch tropism.
* Fertilization only occurs during sexual reproduction.
* A plant is pollinated before it is fertilized.
* A plant can have the roots of one tree and the fruit of another tree through the grafting of two trees.
* By taking in carbon dioxide and giving off oxygen and water, plants help make a more healthful environment.
* Vegetative propagation from cuttings, runners, and bulbs enables growers to produce crops in less time.
* When farmers use vegetative propagation, they don't have to wait for seeds to form and germinate.
* Growing seasons are different in various areas, or zones of the United States.
* A tropism is a plant's response to a stimulus. The response enables the plant to get what it needs to live and grow.
* The steps of seed germination are:
1. Seed takes in water and swells.
2. Seed coat splits.
3. Embryo starts growing, developing roots first.
4. Stem emerges from the seed and grows toward the light.
5. Embryo becomes a seedling and uses food in the cotyledons to grow.
6. Leaves emerge from the stem and manufacture food.
