Mothers and Fathers of Sociology Bio-Board
Intro: Sociology is a social science that vastly covers a wide variety of topics including many
social issues that affect you and I today. Without sociology, all we would have left is the
history books to tell us “what was’ not “what could be.” By studying sociology you are
opening your eyes to a world of understanding and respect for social structures outside your
everyday realm. Sociology provides you with an opportunity to look, think, and appreciate
worlds outside of your “box.” But in order to understand where we are going this semester, we
have to understand who got us there and how. The history of sociology is as important as the
subject itself. Before sociology people were limited in their beliefs and expected to value what
was told to them through history (though much was to be fabricated for social benefits).
The Project: You and a partner are going to be responsible for researching one father/mother of
sociology. You and your partner will only be required to look up specific information about
this one person and briefly report back to the class your findings. You will create a small bioboard (1/4 of a poster board or larger) of your person to show your classmates. You will also
relay back to the class any important information about your person. Sounds simple right?
This project is for the benefit of the class. It is meant to give everyone in your class an
understanding of how the subject of sociology became what it is today. On the following
page(s) you will find exactly what needs to be done for the completion of this project.
Specifics:
 You will be working with ONE other person on this.
o If we need to triple up due to an odd number we may.
 You will spend TWO days in a computer lab at school to complete this assignment.
o If extra time is needed it’s up to you to get together outside these walls.
 You and your partner will be responsible for all materials for this project.
 Everyone will BRIEFLY present their findings at the conclusion of this project.
 This Project is due Tuesday, September 7th for EVERYONE
