Layers of Earth
There are four different layers of Earth. All of the layers have different
names which are the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. Scientists
use information gathered from seismographs after an earthquake to learn
about Earths layers by studying the seismic waves. These waves travel
differently through solids, liquids, and gases.
The crust is Earth’s outermost layer. The crust is what people walk on
which is grass, dirt, sand, and plains. The crust is the thinnest layer out of
all of the other layers. Scientist also imagine that the Earth is a peach so
the crust would be the skin on the peach. Earth’s crust is made of solid
rock, this rock is broken into pieces when we have earthquakes. When you
compare the crust from continents to water, the crust is thicker over land
than water. People live on the crust of Earth. People plant flowers, dig, run,
play, and many different things on Earth’s crust.
The next layer is the mantle. The mantle is the layer below the crust,
but we don’t live on the mantle. The mantle is scorching hot. That’s why
people can’t live on this layer. Earth’s mantle is the thickest layer out of all
of the layers. The mantle is also made of iron, silicon, silicate, and
magnesium. The mantle is so hot that the rocks melt into lava and moves
the mantle due to the high pressure.
Then the next layer is the outer core. The outer core is made of hot
melted iron. This core is 1,400 miles in diameter. This layer is of liquid form
only, there are no pieces of rock in this layer. The inner core floats in the
outer core like a yolk in an egg. The outer core is the third layer of Earth.
The last layer is the inner core. The inner core is in the center of
Earth. This core has a sphere shape and is mostly made of iron. The inner
core spins at different rate than the rest of Earth.
All of Earth’s layers play a very important role to keep the Earth
altogether. These layers are very different and they all have different
characteristics.
