Subject
Year 8 Science – Semester 1
Course Content
Cells: Cells are the basic building blocks of life.
-Identify the key organelles and their functions, and link the structure of a cell to its function.
-Compare and contrast plant and animal cells.
-Understand the differences between unicellular and multicellular organisms.
-Understand hierarchy of organisation.
-Name the parts of a light microscope and be able to calculate magnification.
-Prepare a slide and correctly draw 2D microscope images.
Body Systems: The body is organised into different systems to carry out the range of processes that keep us
alive. Students will select one system to study in detail, choosing from the following: Reproductive system;
Digestive system; Respiratory system; Circulatory system; Excretory system; Musculoskeletal system.
Matter and Elements: Use the particle model to explain and predict the properties and behaviours of
substances.
-Know how the understanding of matter has changed over history.
-The properties of solids/liquids/gases, and the reasons for changes of state.
-Basic atomic structure – the relative sizes, charges and positions of the subatomic particles.
-Difference between atoms, elements and compounds (molecules and lattices) and mixtures
-Writing simple chemical formula with a focus on using the correct symbols to represent elements.
Chemical and Physical Change: Compare physical and chemical changes.
-Understand the difference between physical and chemical change, using real-life examples. Relate
to particle theory.
-Identify and experiment with the indicators of chemical changes
-Understand that all substances have a variety of chemical and physical properties and that this
determines what they can be used for.
-Record accurate results from practicals using the correct format(s).
-Investigate how substances can have their properties altered to make the suitable for new
applications.
Assessment
Assessment will include a range of the following, both as individual and group tasks:
