Sentence Structures
Use this transparency while teaching about various sentence structures.
Simple sentence:
A simple sentence has one subject and one verb.
Example: Pluto revolves around the sun.
Compound sentence:
A compound sentence is two simple sentences joined with a comma
and a conjunction.
Example: Pluto revolves around the sun.
It stays in its orbit.
Pluto revolves around the sun, but it stays in its orbit.
Compound subject:
A sentence with a compound subject has two subjects but only one
verb.
Example: Pluto revolves around the sun.
Venus revolves around the sun.
Pluto and Venus revolve around the sun.
Compound verb:
A sentence with a compound verb has one subject but two verbs.
Example: Pluto revolves around the sun.
Pluto rotates on its axis.
Pluto revolves around the sun and rotates on its axis.

Complex sentence:
A complex sentence is made of two simple sentences, but one is of
more importance. They are combined using a comma and a
connector such as since, after, because, before, if, when, until, while.
Example: Pluto revolves around the sun.
Pluto rotates on its axis.
While Pluto revolves around the sun, it rotates on its axis.
Series of phrases:
Simple sentences that are related can be combined into a series.
Example: Pluto revolves around the sun.
Pluto rotates on its axis.
Pluto stays in its orbit.
Pluto revolves around the sun, rotates on its axis, and
stays in its orbit.
Series of words:
Simple sentences that are related can be combined into a series.
Example: Jupiter is an outer planet.
Pluto is an outer planet.
Saturn is an outer planet.
Pluto, Saturn, and Jupiter are outer planet.
Describing sentences:
Use adjectives and adverbs to describe.
Example: Saturn has rings.
Saturn has thousands of unique rings made of gases and
dust.
Example: I can see Mars.
The red glow of Mars can easily be seen with our naked
eye.
