A guide to leaving a legacy in your will About us We receive lots of enquiries from our supporters about how to leave a gift to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity in their will so to help we have produced this guide. The Royal Marsden opened its doors in 1851 as the world’s first hospital dedicated to cancer treatment and research. Today, together with its academic partner, The Institute of Cancer Research, the hospital forms the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe. We have an international reputation for innovation in the development of new anti-cancer drugs and therapies and care and facilities. This work influences how cancer patients are treated and cared for, not just at The Royal Marsden but all over the world. The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity supports this pioneering work. Projects funded by the charity are above and beyond standard NHS provision and serve to enhance and support the service. It is thanks to our supporters that we are able to help The Royal Marsden continue to push boundaries and raise standards of excellence. Over the years, the charity has funded a number of pioneering projects that have helped to keep the hospital at the forefront of cancer care. These have set national standards of excellence and improved cancer care and treatment world wide. Your gift to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity will ensure that together we can keep making life better for people with cancer, now and in the future. A history of philanthropy Since the hospital was founded it has relied heavily on charitable support to ensure the provision of the very best diagnosis, treatment and care for people affected by cancer. It was Angela Burdett-Coutts, a leading philanthropist of her era, whose gift enabled William Marsden to buy the land and build the hospital in Chelsea. We owe much to her early financial support, and it is this tradition of generosity which enables The Royal Marsden to continue to be a world-leader in cancer services. Nurses on Wilson Ward “The Royal Marsden is the best hospital for treatment and support for people living with cancer and their families. They are worldwide leaders in cancer treatment and I am glad to support such a worthwhile charity.” Peter, supporter of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity 1 How your legacy can help people with cancer for years to come By leaving a legacy to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity you are helping to ensure that future generations will benefit from the very best that The Royal Marsden can offer. Gifts in wills ensure that we are able to continue to make a tangible difference to the way in which cancer is treated and researched on a national and international scale. It is thanks to our supporters that we have made real progress in cancer care over recent years. One example of this is the installation of the da Vinci Robot in 2007, which was funded by the charity. Our robot was the first in the UK and it is now performing pioneering surgery on around 170 patients each year. 2 A guide to leaving a gift in your will The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity The da Vinci S surgical robot What legacy giving has helped to achieve so far The Oak Centre for Children and Young People is one of the largest comprehensive cancer centres in Europe for children and teenagers; the centre sees almost 600 inpatients and more than 5,000 day patients every year. It is based in the heart of the hospital which means our young patients benefit from a wealth of expertise in the most comfortable surroundings possible. The Centre for Molecular Pathology, our research centre is designed to bring leading scientists together under one roof, so that research discoveries can quickly be converted into better ways to diagnose and treat cancer in each individual person. In this way molecular diagnostics has the potential to improve cure rates from cancer on both a national and international scale. 4 A guide to leaving a gift in your will The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity “The Oak Centre for Children and Young People offers a bright and modern environment, with state-of-the-art technology. The centre already had a fantastic medical and nursing team, and the charity has helped us back that up with fantastic facilities. We just wouldn’t have been able to do it without them.” Amber Conley, Matron The Oak Centre for Children and Young People What legacy giving has helped to achieve so far CyberKnife radiotherapy technology uses a robotic arm to deliver high doses of radiotherapy to even the most hard-to-reach tumours. The hospital is one of the first London NHS Trusts to have installed CyberKnife, putting The Royal Marsden in a position to lead research into this form of treatment which has the potential to influence international practise. The Critical Care Unit at The Royal Marsden is the only facility in the UK providing full intensive care exclusively for cancer patients. The Unit is designed around patients to optimise their experience and offer something beyond standard NHS provision. With a high proportion of single rooms, and a focus on space and natural light, this project represents the best in intensive care facilities. A cutting edge IT system has helped free up time for healthcare professionals to care for patients. 6 A guide to leaving a gift in your will The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity “The CyberKnife has x-ray cameras that monitor the position of the tumour and sensors that monitor the patient’s breathing which enables the robot to re-position the radiotherapy beam in order to minimise damage to healthy tissue. For example, lung tumours are not static, they move as patients breathe. CyberKnife moves with the patient’s breathing and can track a moving tumour.” Dr Nick Van As, Consultant Clinical Oncologist Clinical lead for the CyberKnife project 7 Leaving a gift in your will By making a will you can ensure that your family and friends will be looked after. It also allows you to remember the causes that you care about. If you have decided to support The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity in this way it is easier than you may think to make or update a will. If, after you have remembered those important to you, you would like to leave a gift to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity in your will we have put together the following step by step guide to help you. 8 A guide to leaving a gift in your will The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity Step 1 Updating or making a will If you already have a will, you can simply ask your solicitor to add a codicil that specifies your wish to leave a gift to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. This is an extra clause that means you don’t have to redraft the whole document. We would always recommend that you seek the advice of a solicitor when writing your will or adding new clauses to it. Step 2 Putting together a list of your assets and liabilities Step 3 Choosing the type of gift you want to leave If you are writing a will for the first time, you need to work out what your estate is worth. Doing this before you visit your solicitor can help you to save time and money. The types of things to consider are your home and any other property, jewellery and other items of worth, stocks and shares, and insurance policies. The different ways to remember The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity in your will: A specific amount of money Pecuniary legacy A particular item Specific legacy A percentage of your estate Residuary legacy This means that, however much your estate is ultimately worth, there will be a gift to your chosen charity once you have made specific provision for your loved ones. Leaving this type of legacy also means that you don’t have to keep changing your will as your circumstances change. 9 Specific wording for your will To ensure your wishes are followed exactly we have prepared some sample wording for you to take to your solicitor when writing or updating your will. The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity is governed by an independent board of Trustees who meet regularly to consider, determine and review the charity’s strategies and policies, including the way in which unrestricted funds are distributed and spent to best benefit The Royal Marsden. Unrestricted income allows us to plan, to budget and to be able to continue our tradition of delivering large and significant projects which change the way cancer is researched and treated worldwide. 10 A guide to leaving a gift in your will The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity If you would like to leave a gift to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity in your will, it is important to include our full name, address and charity number, as shown below: The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity Fulham Road London, SW3 6JJ Registered Charity No.1095197 Sample wording to take to your solicitor I hereby bequeath to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity – registered charity number 1095197, based in the Fulham Road, London, SW3 6JJ, – the sum of * and I direct that the receipt of the Director of Finance or other approved officer shall be a good discharge for such a legacy. Should you wish that the bequest be used for a specific area of treatment or research then this can be done by inserting the words... for the purpose of ...where the asterisk is placed. Should you wish to leave The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity the whole or part of the residue of your estate it is best to consult your solicitor. It is important that you include the following clause in your will If at my death any charity named as beneficiary in this will or any codicil hereto has changed its name or amalgamated with or transferred its assets to another body then my executors shall give effect to any gift made to such charity as if it had been made (in the first case) to the body in its changed name or (in the second case) to the body which results from such amalgamation or to which such transfer has been made.
