Types of Rock
IGNEOUS ROCK: volcanic rock is formed. Intrusive rocks are igneous rocks that have formed (and cooled slowly) beneath
the surface of the Earth
MAGMA: is a mixture of molten rock, volatiles and solids that is found beneath the surface of the Earth, that is very hot.
MOLTEN: Made liquid by heat;
LAVA: Lava refers both to molten rock expelled by a volcano during an eruption and the resulting rock after solidification
and cooling.
METAMORPHOSIS: is a biological process by which an animal physically develops after birth or hatching, involving a
conspicuous and relatively abrupt change
SEDIMENT: is naturally-occurring material that is broken down by processes of weathering and erosion
ALIGN: To improve intrinsic performance, you need to align data
ERODE: The process of eroding or the condition of being eroded
The Rock Cycle
IGNEOUS: formed by the cooling and hardening of magma or molten lava.
SEDIMENTARY: when sediment is deposited and becomes tightly compacted.
METAMORPHIC: formed when igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks undergo a physical change
due to extreme heat and pressure
MAGMA: The molten rock material that originates under the Earth's crust and forms igneous rock when it
has cooled.
ROCK CYCLE: An idealized cycle of processes undergone by rocks in the earth's crust.
Weathering:
WEATHERING: rocks that are exposed to weather
SEDIMENTS: broken down rocks
SEDIMENTARY ROCKS: rocks that are made up of broken down rocks
MECHANICAL WEATHERING: weathering were its still the same thing but looks different
CHEMICAL WEATHERING: weathering were it changes properties
CARBONIC ACID: A weak unstable acid present in solutions of carbon dioxide
Erosion:
EROSION: wearing a way of land surface materials
WEATHERING: chemical or mechanical processes by which rocks exposed to the weather
RIVER DELTA: usually triangular mass of sediment, especially silt and sand, deposited at the mouth of a river
CANYONS: deep narrow valley with steep clifs with a stream at t he bottom
GLACIER: A large mass of ice
GLACIAL EROSION: glacier carries away rocks to different places
Mineral Identification:
MINERAL: a natural element
TRAIT: genetically like the way it looks.
HARDNESS: measure of how easily a mineral can be scratched Hardness is measured on the Mohs scale.
MOHS SCALE: measures hardness of a mineral
LUSTER: light reflection of a mineral
STREAK (NOUN): line or mark
CLEAVAGE: breaking of rocks with a smooth surface
FRACTURE (NOUN): broke with jagged edges
