AP Art History Greek & Roman Architecture Project Mrs. Cook Objective: The purpose of the assignment is to help students become more aware of the Greco‐Roman architectural influence in America Assignment: In this assignment, students will analyze the elements that have influenced the architects to design in the modern fashion while maintaining some of the classical origins set out by the Greeks and Romans. You will create a presentation (ex: PowerPoint, Prezi, Google Presentation) on the influence of Greco‐Roman architecture on a building in America. You may use any building that employs Greek and Roman elements. Students will discuss how the structure employs Greek and or Roman ideas in its site/orientation, materials, classical details/decoration, construction (arches, domes, columns), and function. Design elements would include type and style of columns, friezes, and other important elements. Students will need to identify at least 7 items that have interior and exterior influences from Greek and Roman art and architecture. Each of these items will need to have a specific slide with the architecture detail and the Greco‐Roman building that could have influenced your building such as Doric columns from the Temple of Hephaestus. Students will need to do research on the architect(s) and the history of the building. Students need to save their project in their “Google Period 2 folder” so they are ready to present to the class. Students will receive 15 extra points for visiting a local building and including pictures that they took on the visit.
