The Six Nutrients
You will chart food sources for basic
nutrients.
Chart how the body uses certain
nutrients.
Carbohydrates:

They are Sugar and Starches.
They are used for energy.
There are Simple and Complex Carbs.
Simple carbs are items like candy and soda.
– They provide short amounts of energy but no
nutrients.
• Complex carbs are items like grains, rice,
potato's, carrots and corn.
– They provide longer lasting energy and the nutrients
your body needs like fiber and Vitamin A.
Protein
• Your body is made up of proteins:
Its in muscle, organs and cells.
• Protein is made up from amino acids.
• Some amino acids are made from the body and 9
amino acids that we need come from food.
• Animal meat, eggs, fish and dairy have complete
protein; all 9 amino acids.
• Plant food and wheat only contain some of those
amino acids.
• You can combined beans and rice to get a complete
protein.
Fats
• Fat is a component of all
cell membranes and stored energy in the body.
• When you fast your body uses your fat for energy.
• All fats are essential for making the body work
properly.
• Too much fat can cause weight gain or heart
disease.
• Fat is not bad for you if you eat it in moderation.
Vitamins
• Chemical substances that help the body use
energy, build proteins, make cells, and repair
injuries.
• Vitamins have two categories.
– Fat Soluble –Vitamin A, D, E
– Water Soluble-Vitamin C and B
Fat Soluble Vitamins
• Vitamin A-Necessary for eyes, bones, and skin.
• Vitamin D-is used to make bones, teeth and
allows your body to use the calcium that you
eat.
• Vitamin E-Heals wounds and fights against
bodily toxins.
Water Soluble
• Vitamin C-fights infections and for using
stored energy in the body. Found in citrus
fruits and peppers.
• Vitamin B- builds blood cells, nerve cells and
are vital for many of your bodies chemical
reactions. Found in meat and veggies.
Minerals
• The building blocks of the body but contain no
calories or energy.
• Minerals work with vitamins to give our
bodies what they need for example:
– Zinc, Manganese and Selenium are essential
minerals for development of cells, healing and all
the bodies immune reactions.
These Minerals come from food.
Water
• Water is essential for life.
• It is the single largest component of your
body.
• You use water to metabolize your food, lose
heat through seating and remove toxins in
your urine.
• Without the proper amount of water it can
affect your kidneys, temperature and blood
pressure.
Homework Due February 18-21
• You will choose a partner and then given a
vitamin or mineral to research.
• One page typed 12 font, time new roman. Double
spaced.
• What it is called?
• Is it a vitamin or mineral?
• How the body uses it.
• Where it can be found. (example: foods, oils)
• What happens if you don’t take the vitamin or
mineral?
