6th SC Inner Planets Std 3 Obj 1 *Can you name the Inner Planets? *Do you know why the Inner Planets are called the “Rocky Midgets?” 6th SC Inner Planets Std 3 Obj 1 In this lesson, you will learn about the four inner planets, and you will learn their common characteristics. The four inner planets are: Mercury Venus Earth Mars *They are called the inner planets because they are the planets closest to the sun. *Let’s look at each of these planets more closely. 6th SC Inner Planets Std 3 Obj 1 •One rotation takes 59 days. •One revolution is 88 days. •It is rocky and small •It has no moon or rings. •Mercury is the closest planet to the sun. •It looks a lot like our moon. You can go to this link to find out more about Mercury. http://starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/StarChild/solar_system_level1/mercury.html 6th SC Inner Planets Std 3 Obj 1 •One rotation takes 243 days. •One revolution is 224.7 days. •It has no moon or rings. •It is rocky and small •Venus is the second planet from the sun. •It is as dry as a desert and hotter than an oven.. You can go to this link to find out more about Venus http://starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/StarChild/ 6th SC Inner Planets Std 3 Obj 1 •One rotation takes 24 hours. •One year or revolution is 365 1/4 days. •It has 1 moon and no rings. •It is rocky and small •It is the third planet from the sun. •Earth is mostly covered with water. You can go to this link to find out more about Earth http://starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/StarChild/solar_system_level1/ earth.html 6th SC Inner Planets Std 3 Obj 1 •One rotation takes 24.5 hours. •One revolution is 687 days. •It has 2 moons and no rings. •It is rocky and small •It is the fourth planet from the sun and the last of the inner planets. •Mars looks red because of rusty iron in its soil and red dust in its air. You can go to this link to find out more about Mars. http://starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/StarChild/solar_system_level1/mars.html 6th SC Inner Planets Std 3 Obj 1 Now that you have looked at each of the planets, did you notice any common characteristics among the inner planets? Here are some things that you should know: —The inner planets are all small and rocky which is why they are called the “Rocky Midgets.” —The inner planets are all solid. —The inner planets are all warmer because they are closer to the sun. Here are some other websites you can explore to find out more about the inner planets. http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/profile.cfm http://www.windows2universe.org/our_solar_system/solar_system.html http://nineplanets.org Go to Safari Montage and watch Chapter 2 of The Magic School Bus Gets Lost in Space. 6th SC Inner Planets Std 3 Obj 1 *Complete part one of the attached worksheet “Inner Planets” to show what you have learned so far. *Complete part two of the attached worksheet “Inner Planets” to show what you have learned so far. Now, you get to create a new Inner Planet. The planet needs to fit the other characteristics of the Inner Planets (a Rocky Midget). You need to name your planet and give a basic description: distance from sun, rotation time, revolution time, size, temperature, atmosphere, does it have moons, etc. You also need to draw and color of picture of the planet you’ve created.
