Entering the War



As part of the Schlieffen Plan, Germany had to go through Belgium to attack France where the
borders were less fortified
The goal of the Schlieffen Plan was to quickly defeat France by getting to Paris so that Germany
would only have to worry about Russia on their eastern front.
Russians attacking East Germany (Prussia) and the ability of the British to mobilize quickly halted
the Schlieffen Plan
Battle of the Marne September 5-12, 1914






Stops the advance of the Schlieffen Plan
French hold out against Germans until Germans retreated
French were losing troops quick but were replenished by troops in Paris (extra 6000)
Once Germans retreated, the Allies crossed the Marne River
About 250,000 French soldiers lost
