Job Description: Aftercare Counsellor
Title: Aftercare Counsellor.
Role: The Aftercare Counsellor, as part of the Aftercare Team, will provide ongoing
support for people in recovery, or those that have made significant positive changes in
respect of their drug use, in order to maintain and reinforce the positive changes.
Job Location. The Aftercare Counsellor will be based in the Ballymun Youth Action
Project, with some work offsite.
Salary: HSE Social Worker Scale
Principal Duties and Responsibilities.
 To provide ongoing support for people in recovery, or those that have made
significant positive changes in respect of their drug/alcohol use, in order to
maintain and reinforce the positive changes.
 To provide individual counselling to persons affected by drug or alcohol use.
 To facilitate Treatment and Therapeutic Groups within the aftercare setting.
 To facilitate/deliver programme sessions, where appropriate, within the aftercare
and wider BYAP setting.
 To facilitate the development and implementation of integrated Care Plans for
individuals.
 To inform and facilitate individuals in accessing other appropriate health care and
support services.
 To provide Crisis Interventions for those requiring such a service.
 To support/attend Case Conferences convened in support of individuals and
families affected by substance use.
 To provide interventions and support for individuals undertaking detox.
 To impact in drug and related harms associated with drug and alcohol use,
particularly in the context of relapse.
 To provide a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions to drug/alcohol users
with a connection to Ballymun, while in prison, and post release.
 To assist drug/alcohol users linked with Probation and other justice services.
 To be part of a team providing a range of complimentary therapies that stand
alone or complement existing counselling and support services within BYAP.
 To provide support for parents, partners, or siblings of individuals who are
drug/alcohol users.
 To facilitate, through education and training, this community and other
communities, to respond to the challenges of drug and alcohol use.

To contribute to the ongoing review and development of effective strategies to
support aftercare.
To develop and maintain effective communication with the wider “Recovery”
movement.
To creatively work with people towards establishing supportive social networks
and facilitating their movement on from addiction services.
To make full use of formal and informal supervision provided by supervisor and
peers.
To pursue data, knowledge and understanding of the extent of drug related issues.
To maintain a high standard of professionalism at all times, to adhere to the
policies and procedures of the Project, and to maintain the necessary accreditation
up to date.
The duties and responsibilities of the position are not definitive nor restrictive and
can be modified to ensure successful operation of the Project.
Reporting Relationships
 The post reports to the Director of the Ballymun Youth Action Project.
 The Aftercare Team is part of the continuum of services provided by the
Ballymun Youth Action Project, and works under the guidance of the Client
Services Coordinator.

Requirements/Qualifications for the Position:
Essential Requirements
Candidates must possess a professional qualification in counselling/psychotherapy at a
minimum 3-year diploma standard OR a professional qualification in counselling
psychology from an accredited training school recognised by a relevant professional body
within the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP) or the Psychological Society of Ireland
(PSI)
AND Accreditation within a relevant Professional Body within the ICP, or ACI, or PSI.
Candidates will have at least 3 years’ experience of working within the context of
addiction.
Candidates must successfully complete the Garda Vetting Process.
Desirable Requirements
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Demonstrated ability to provide appropriate interventions for individuals and groups in
an addiction setting.
Demonstrated understanding of working with addictions in a community setting, and
from a community development perspective.
Demonstrated ability to work with appropriate therapeutic tools, and the management of
client information on a data system.
