Convection Currents
4. Basic Research
For each flap (inner core, outer
core, mantle, and crust) find these:
1. Composition
(rocks/minerals it’s made of)
2. Thickness
3. State of Matter
(Solid? Liquid? Both?)
4. Temperature
(range or average)
5. Additional research you should
complete and show on each flap:
1. Crust:
a. Compare the properties of Oceanic Crust with
Continentental Crust.
b. Draw or print a diagram showing each type of
crust, the lithosphere, and asthenosphere.
2. Mantle:
a. How is each sub-layer of the mantle (upper,
middle, lower) different?
3. Outer Core: a. Why is it liquid?
4. Inner Core:
a. Why is it solid?
b. How is the core related to Earth’s magnetic field?

You may do an internet search for ‘additional research’ you can’t find, but remember to use reputable
(trustworthy) sites!
Example search: “what is the continental crust made of?” or “what causes Earth’s magnetic field?”
