Part 1 Usage
A) Present participles as adjectives
We add –ing to the base form of a verb to form a present participle. We use it as an adjective to
describe the people or things that produce a certain feeling. We often use present participles as
adjectives before a noun or after verbs like be, feel, look, seem, etc.
Example 1
In their leisure time, they like playing interesting computer games.
Exercise 1
Fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the verbs in brackets.

We use a present participle to describe an active or a continuous action.

B) Past participles as adjectives
We form a past participle by adding –ed to a regular verb or changing an irregular verb into its
past participle form. We use it as an adjective to describe how people feel. We often use past
participles as adjectives before a noun or after verbs like be, feel, look, seem, etc.

They cannot sit still for long because they get bored easily.

Part 3 Reading
A MURDER IN LAM TSUEN
 Chapter Two 
Danny was the son of the owner of the haunted house. His dead body was hung in Lam Tsuen
Wishing Tree. Lam Tai Man was his 65-year-old dad and was also the Head of Lam Tsuen Village.
Danny, 21 years old, was an obedient and helpful person. Most people in the village liked him.
They felt sorry that he died. They wondered about the cause of his death because he never
made anyone angry.
Recently, the villagers have requested a change of Lam Tsuen. First, they would like to stop
tourists from making wishes by throwing stuff to the tree. They wanted to keep the tree in a very
big glass box. Also, they would like Danny to be the new Head of Lam Tsuen Village although his
dad has been doing a great job. Villagers thought Lam Tai Man might be the one who killed
Danny.
In the Wishing Tree, there lived a beautiful Goddess. She blessed Lam Tsuen villagers and
tourists who to make wishes. She did not get married before she died.
