Personification in The Last Book in the Universe
Personification: When an object, idea, or animal is given human traits or characteristics.
Directions: Underline the idea, object, or animal being personified, and then circle what
it’s doing that makes it an example of personification.
1. “Don’t be surprised,” he says with a smile. “Bad news travels fast in this part of the
world.”
2. After what seems like forever, I finally get to a place where I know the streets and they
know me.
3. The voice in the dark sounds as scared as me.
4. The name gives me hope.
5. Little Face gobbles it down like he’s starving, flashing a smile that eats up his whole
face.
6. I don’t know if the old buildings can see or not, but they sure can moan when the
wind goes through the steel.
7. As it turns out, the Pipe is right where Ryter thought it was. Sitting up there on its
crumbling pylons, ready to take us where we’re going.
8. The Pipe doesn’t care.
9. “I am a child of Eden,” she says, ignoring the daggers that dance beneath her elegant
nose.
10. My heart thinks she’s incredibly brave, braver than I’ll ever be.
11. It’s a smile that wants to chew you into little bits.
12. The only light inside the shack is a single candle that barely pushes the shadows
back.
13. Bleek’s eyes blaze, as if he’s been lit from within by the candle. The light is cruel and
angry.
14. Her laughter follows us all the way to Eden.
15. “Don’t let the darkness eat you up, son.”
