Youth Singers of Toronto Lysander Stage Manager Eric Morin Sandy Plunkett Hippolyta/Titania Assistant Stage Manager Welcome to Canadian Stage and welcome to the park for this 30th anniversary of Shakespeare in High Park, Canada’s longest-running outdoor theatre event. Thirty years after its inception in 1983, Shakespeare in High Park continues to be a magical experience for families, community members, and theatre artists. At Canadian Stage, we’re proud to play a role in bringing one of Toronto’s most beloved summer traditions to life. Presenting accessible theatre that engages the community is a vital part of what we do, and what better way than by enjoying a theatre-inspired picnic under the stars! William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream was the first play ever presented at Shakespeare in High Park, and in celebration of the 30th anniversary we are bringing back this playful and mischievous comedy. A much-loved and oft-performed classic, I hope you’ll enjoy this wonderful new production directed with fierce creative force by Richard Rose. Tamara Podemski Laura Baxter Helena Production/Stage Management Assistant Sarah Sherman Dilara Aksak Pierre Le Coing Production Assistant & Driver Pierre Simpson Chris Whitlock In addition to Shakespeare in High Park, Canadian Stage also presents a full season of theatre year-round in the heart of downtown Toronto at the Bluma Appel Theatre and the Berkeley Street Theatre. Our playbill highlights performance styles that integrate theatre with other artistic mediums such as dance, film, visual arts, and more. In addition to showcasing the best of Canadian and international artists, we are committed to offering artist development and education initiatives, as well as youth and community outreach programs. Enjoy the show — and please, tread carefully: there may be spritely fairies underfoot! His work transformed the English language, playwriting and the theatre experience. Though written in the 16th century, his works continue to enlighten, challenge and entertain audiences and readers all over the world. In this production, director Richard Rose has given the play a unique Toronto twist, bringing it closer than ever to High Park today. Celebrations are planned to mark the marriage of the Duke Theseus to Hippolyta. A frustrated townsperson, Egeus, comes to Theseus for help — his daughter Hermia refuses to marry Demetrius because she is in love with Lysander. Theseus orders Hermia to obey her father but she and Lysander decide to escape together. They confide in their friend Helena and she, in love with Demetrius and hoping to win his heart, betrays their plan. That night, all four lovers sneak away into the forest — Hermia and Lysander together, with Helena and Demetrius following. A group of amateur actors, led by Pierre Le Coing but dominated by the diva Bottom, go to the woods to rehearse The Tragedy of Pyramus and Thisbe, which they will perform for the Duke’s wedding. portrait of william shakespeare Oberon and Titania, fairy rulers of the forest, have been arguing. To spite Titania, Oberon uses the juice of a magic flower which makes her fall in love with the first creature she sees. This happens to be Bottom, whom jester Puck has bewitched, giving him the head of a donkey. Oberon tells Puck to use the juice on Demetrius so he will return Helena’s love, but Puck mistakenly bewitches Lysander instead and he falls in love with Helena. We watch the characters’ mishaps as they struggle their way out of and into the knots of love.
