MD, FACS, FASCRS Dear Colleagues, The Inova Breast Cancer Institute (IBCI) was founded several years ago to create a cohesive resource for breast patients. Since IBCI was founded, Inova now has 2 free standing breast centers at Fairfax and Alexandria that are co-located with radiology, offering patients “one-stop” for diagnosis, multi-disciplinary high risk clinics and complete care coordination. Our breast programs continue to grow across the system. Our navigators are busy with a multitude of activities and providing patient support. We treat more breast cancers than any other program in the region. More and more patients are presented at our multi-disciplinary breast conferences, allowing patients to benefit from the opinions of physicians from all the breast related fields: women’s imaging, breast pathology, breast surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and genetics. We provide the only genetics program in Northern Virginia as a free service to all Inova patients. Our social support services continue to grow and we will be introducing a new Survivors Offering Support program in 2012 which will coordinate with Life with Cancer. We hope to start our multi-disciplinary clinic in 2012 so patients can meet with physicians from various specialties at once. The most exciting news is the plan to build a new cancer center on the Fairfax campus. This flagship cancer center will help coordinate cancer services across the system. The CME conference, Encompass: A Multi-Disciplinary Breast Care Symposium is another opportunity for IBCI to provide a service to the Northern Virginia community by updating fellow physicians on issues related to breast care.
