Writing Numbers and Associating to Quantities
Guided Practice: Activity Sheet 35
•Model writing the number 3. Point to the star, and tell your child this is where to start
writing the number 3. Use your finger to trace around the number. Ask your student
to repeat your action with the dotted-line numbers, starting at the arrow and tracing

•Model covering the 3 circles with 3 circle TouchShapes. Ask your student how many
circles there are. Tell him to draw a ring around the 3 circles. Place 3 rhombus shapes
on the 3 shaded rhombuses. Ask your student how many rhombuses there are. Tell
him to draw a ring the rhombuses because there are 3 shapes in this group. Place 3
rhombus shapes on the 3 shaded rhombuses. Ask your student how many squares
there are. Tell him not to ring the squares because there are 2 shapes in this group,
not 3 shapes. Elicit from your child where there is another group of 3 shapes on the
page (rectangles). Have your student cover and count them. Then ask your child to
ring this groups of 3 shapes. Ask your child to tell about something they have 3 of.

the problem and answer aloud, “1 plus 2 equals 3.” Have him write the number

the TouchPoint numbers to count how many there are in all. [ While the goal is to
have your student see the quantities as a whole, he might count to add the parts. If he does,
have him count the owl TouchPoints on each number in the second row in the correct Touching/
Counting Pattern. Then guide him as he touches and counts the TouchPoints on each number in
the third row in the correct order.]
•Have your student say aloud each time, “1 plus 2 equals 3,” and write the answer
