Mucles of the Leg – I included spinal levels
Anterior Compartment – Deep Fibular Nerve
 Tibialis anterior muscle: 1, 2 (L4-L5)
 Extensor digitorum longus muscle: 1, 2 (L5,S1)
 Extensor hallucis longus muscle: 1, 2, 3 (L5,S1)
 Fibularis (peroneus) tertius muscle: 1, 2 (L5,S1)
Lateral Compartment – Superficial Fibular Nerve
 Fibularlis longus muscle: 1, 2 (L5,S1)
 Fibularis brevis muscle: 1, 2 (L5,S1)
Superficial Posterior Compartment – Tibial Nerve
 Plantaris muscle: 1, 2 (S1, S2)
 Soleus muscle: 1 (S1, S2)
 Gastrocnemius muscle: 1 (S1, S2)
Deep Posterior Compartment – Tibial Nerve
 Tibialis posterior muscle: 1, 2 (L4, L5)
 Flexor digitorum longus muscle: 1, 2, 3 (L5, S1, S2)
 Flexor hallucis longus muscle: 1, 2 (L5, S1, S2)
 Popliteus muscle: 1, 2, 3 (L4, L5, S1)
Comments about leg muscles
 Divide the muscles into those that do plantar flexion and those that do
dorsiflexion
 Look at the spinal levels and actions of the tibialis anterior and tibialis posterior
muscles
 Note that the popliteus muscle is located just posterior to the knee, while the other
muscles are along the shafts of the tibia and fibula. This relates to the spinal
levels of innervation
 Compare the insertions of the tibialis anterior and the fibularis longus muscles.
Think about the direction these muscles travel to attach to the insertion.
 Compare the insertions of the fibularis brevis and fibularis tertius muscles.
Again, what it the angle or direction of the attachment.
