Chemistry in Daily Life Introduction Chemistry: Chemistry is the science of matter, especially its chemical reactions, but also its composition, structure and properties. [pic] Daily Life: All the things that happen or that you do regularly. Chemistry in Daily Life: Chemistry is a big part of our everyday life. We find chemistry in daily life in the foods we eat, the air we breathe, our soap, our emotions and literally every object we can see or touch. Here's a look at some everyday chemistry. [pic] Actually, we found chemistry every were in our daily life, in every sector of our life. Importance of Chemistry: Chemistry is important in everyday life because everything is made of chemicals. You are made of chemicals. Many of the changes you observe in the world around you are caused by chemical reactions. Examples include changing colors of leaves, cooking food and getting clean. Breathing: Breathing is chemistry, because plants create oxygen through photosynthesis using carbon dioxide that humans exhale. Every moment we take breath for live. So, Chemistry uses our daily life. Drug: Behind every drug there is utilization of mixed chemicals so present man can not lead life without drug that is miracle of chemistry. Chemistry in Household Work Chemistry can found every were so Chemistry use in our house. We use Chemistry in every work, what we do in our life. Home needs: Plastics: All home needs like plastics(mugs, buckets, polythene covers,bags,comb.....etc) which made by the use of Chemistry. Glass: In daily life glass is used for a variety of purposes, the glass is used for making window panes, bulbs &tumblers in soda glass. Soaps: [pic] Soaps are the detergents used since long. Soaps used for cleaning purpose are sodium or potassium salts of long chain fatty acids, e.g., stearic, oleic and palmitic acids. Soaps containing sodium salts are formed by heating fat (i.e., glyceryl ester of fatty acid) with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. This reaction is known as saponification. Chemistry for washing: Chemicals make our clothes clean. Not only clothes but we also use chemicals to wash utensils. So many kinds of detergent made by using chemistry. Synthetic detergents are mainly classified into three categories: i) Anionic detergents (ii) Cationic detergents and (iii) Non-ionic detergents This kind Chemistry of detergents we use Use in our in daily life. Food Chemicals are added to food for (i) their preservation, (ii) enhancing their appeal, and (iii) adding nutritive value in them. Main categories of food additives are as follows: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv)Flour Food Flavors Fat emulsifiers improvers – ant and and staling stabilizing agents and colors sweeteners agents bleaches (v) Antioxidants (vi)Preservatives vii) Nutritional supplements such as minerals, vitamins and amino acids. Except for chemicals of category (vii) None of the above additives have nutritive value. These are added either to increase the shelf life of stored food or for cosmetic purposes. In this section we will discuss only food preservatives. Food preservatives: Food preservatives prevent spoilage of food due to microbial growth. Preservatives The most commonly used preservatives include table salt, sugar, vegetable oils and sodium benzoate, C6H5COONa. Sodium benzoate is used in limited quantities and is metabolized in the body. Salts of sorbic acid and propanoic acid are also used as preservatives. Summary Chemistry is essentially the study of materials and the development of new materials for the betterment of humanity. A drug is a chemical agent, which affects human metabolism and provides cure from ailment. If taken in doses higher than recommended, these may have poisonous effect. Use of chemicals for therapeutic effect is called chemotherapy. Drugs usually interact with biological macromolecules such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. These are called target molecules. Drugs are designed to interact with specific targets so that these have the least chance of affecting other targets. This minimizes the side effects and localizes the action of the drug. Drug chemistry centers on arresting microbes/destroying microbes, preventing the body from various infectious diseases, releasing mental stress, etc. Thus, drugs like analgesics, antibiotics, antiseptics, disinfectants, antacids and tranquilizers are used for specific purpose. To check the population explosion, ant fertility drugs have also become prominent in our life. Food additives such as preservatives, sweetening agents, flavors, antioxidants, edible colors and nutritional supplements are added to the food to make it attractive, palatable and add nutritive value. Preservatives are added to the food to prevent spoilage due to microbial growth. Artificial sweeteners are used by those who need to check the calorie intake or are diabetic and want to avoid taking sucrose. These days, detergents are much in vogue and get preference over soaps because they work even in hard water. Synthetic detergents are classified into three main categories, namely: anionic, cationic and non-ionic, and each category has its specific uses. Detergents with straight chain of hydrocarbons are preferred over branched chain as the latter are non-biodegradable and consequently cause environmental pollution.
