Name: Date: Lesson 6.2 Representing Functions
Write a verbal description of each function. Then write an algebraic
equation for the function.
1.
Laura can type 75 words per minute on a computer keyboard.
The number of words she can type, N, is a function of the amount of time,
t minutes, she spends at the computer keyboard.
2.When Melissa goes on vocation, she boards her dog at a kennel. The kennel
charges a flat fee of $50 and a daily rate of $10. The total amount Melissa pays
for her dog to stay at the kennel, y dollars, is a function of the number of days
that she boards the dog, d.
Write an algebraic equation for each function. Then construct a table of x and y values for the function.

3.
Maria and her friends are making beaded bracelets to raise funds for their
mission trip. Each bracelet is made up of 12 beads. The total number of beads
needed, y, is a function of the number of bracelets they make, x.
4.
A tank contains 72 gallons of water. A pump rated at 5 gallons per minute, is
used to transfer water from the tank to a mixing vessel. The amount of water in
the tank, A, is a function of the amount of time the pump is in use, t minutes.

Use the table of values to plot a graph to represent the function.
7. The table shows the number of hanging brackets, y, needed to hang x
paintings in an art gallery. Use 1 unit on the horizontal axis to
represent 1 painting for the x interval and 1 unit on the vertical axis to
represent 3 brackets for the y interval.

A dancing studio charges a $35 registration fee for class enrollment plus a
per class fee. The dance class Marissa plans to take is $70 per hour. The table
shows the total cost, y dollars, as a function of the number of class hours, x.
Use 1 unit on the horizontal axis to represent 1 hour for the x interval and
1 unit on the vertical axis to represent $35 for the y interval.

a) Write an equation in slope-intercept form to represent the function.
b)What information do the values for slope and y-intercept give you about
the function?
10.
Jason had a prepaid movie card with a value of $45. Every time he watches
a movie, $7.50 is deducted from the value of his card. The amount of money
remaining on his card, y dollars, is a function of the number of movies he watches, x.
a)Write a verbal description of the function and then write an algebraic
equation for the function.
b)Construct a table of x and y values for the function in a). Use values
of x from 0 to 6.
