From Bacteria to Plants Chapter 3, Section 1 (pg 74-83) Protists List the characteristics of all protists. Protists: • are the “odds and ends” kingdom • are eukaryotes (cells contain a nucleus) • live in moist surroundings • are very diverse List the 3 types of protists and the characteristics of each. Types of protists: 1. animal-like protists are all heterotrophs and unicellular. 2. plantlike protists are mostly autotrophs, provide food and oxygen, are both unicellular and multicellular, and come in a variety of colors. 3. funguslike protists are heterotrophs (like animals), have cell walls (like plants), use spores to reproduce, and are able to move at some point. List the 4 types of animal-like protists and the characteristics of each. Animal-like protists: 1. sarcodines move using pseudopods, have a contractile vacuole (releases water), and live in soil or water. Ex/ amoeba 2. ciliates move using cilia, have 2 contractile vacuoles, 2 nuclei, and live in water. 3. flagellates move using flagella. 4. parasites List the 6 types of plantlike protists (algae). Plantlike protists: 1. diatoms 2. dinoflagellates 3. euglenoids 4. red algae 5. green algae 6. brown algae List the 3 types of funguslike protists. Funguslike protists: 1. slime molds 2. water molds 3. downy mildews attack crops
