2016 Top Advisor Rankings: North Carolina
Ranked #1: William Oliver ♦ Oliver learned about the importance of diversification the hard way. His uncle, an executive at a
grocery-store chain, lost more than a third of his net worth when the company stock plummeted after a business announcement.
“I thought, wow, what if I could help people prevent that type of thing because they didn’t properly diversify?” In the mid-1990s
Oliver quit his sales-manager job and began his career in advisement. Oliver, 48, likes value-driven investments. “We are of the
mind-set of growth at a reasonably price over getting into areas that are way overvalued and have to correct.” He sees
opportunity to add small-caps to client portfolios, since they’ve been so beaten up. He also favors energy companies, including
utilities and midstream MLPs, but not pure drilling companies. He also likes consumer staples, and high-quality municipal bonds.
To Oliver, the recent correction spells opportunity. “We think it’s a healthy selloff,” he says. “This will provide a path for people to
realize value.” — CHARLES KEENAN

Asset allocation cannot eliminate the risk of fluctuating prices and uncertain returns.
Stocks offer long-term growth potential, but may fluctuate more and provide less current income than other investments. An investment in the stock market
should be made with an understanding of the risks associated with common stocks, including market fluctuations.
Investing in foreign securities presents certain risks not associated with domestic investments, such as currency fluctuation, political and economic instability,
and different accounting standards. This may result in greater share price volatility.
The rankings are based on data provided by over 4,000 advisors. Factors included in the rankings were assets under management, revenue produced for the
firm, regulator record, quality of practice and philanthropic work. Investment performance isn’t an explicit component.
