How do glaciers cause erosion?
Objective: Explain how a glacier causes erosion. Describe two results of
glacial deposition
Sometimes gravel
and pieces of rock
are frozen into the
ice at the bottom
and along the sides
of a glacier. As the
glacier moves over
bedrock, small
pieces of bedrock
are scraped and
carved away by the
rocks set into the glacier.
As the valley scrapes away the
floor and sides of a valley, it
becomes u-shaped. Small side
glaciers flow into the main
glacier, melt, and leave small
glacier valleys, called hanging
valleys.
Frozen sediments moves with the glacier and is carried to new places.
If it moves to warmer places, the ice around the edges begins to melt.
Rocks and sediment that were frozen in the glacier are left behind. This
loose material is called till.
Boulders that have been left
behind by a retreating glacier
are called erratics. Some
have been carried many
kilometers away from where
they came from. They were
frozen into the ice and left
behind when the glacier
melted.
