Mitosis
Cell Division
Single Cell Organisms
-Reproduction
-Assexual reproduction in which a single celled organisms
divide in two creating two creating identical offspring
Multicellular Organisms
-Growth
-Cell Division produces new cells
-Repair
-Damaged Cells are replaced by new cells
-Ex. Cut your hand or break a bone
Cell Division Parts
DNA- contains the information that determines the traits that a living thing
inherits and needs to live
Chromatin- contain DNA and Protein
Chromosomes- compacted chromatin; consist of two cromatid
Cell Cycle
The life of a eukaryotic cells is called the cell cycle can divided into three
phases. They include Interphase, Mitosis, and Cytokinesis.
Interphase
The part of the cell cycle that is not dividing. The cell grows about twice the
size it was when it was first produced. The cell engages in normal life.
Cell Division Phases
Prophase- Chromatin in the nucleus condense and become chromosomes;
The membrane around the nucleus breaks down
Inerphase
Prophase
Cell Division Phases
Metaphase- Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
Prophase
Metaphase
Cell Division Phases
Anaphase- The chromatids separate and pulled to opposite side of the cell;
Each cell ends up with a complete set of chromosomes
Metaphase
Anaphase
Cell Division Phases
Telophase-A new nuclear membrane forms around each group of
chromosomes; Cell now two identical nuclei
Anaphase
Telaphase
Cytokinesis
Is the division of the parent cell’s cytoplasm. During cytokinesis the cell
membrane pinches inward between the new nuclei
Start of New Cell Cycle
Both new cells start the cycle again.
