Haiti Earthquake By: Joseph, Lily and Veruska Veruska Location Haiti is a Caribbean country, located in the Western part of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with Dominican Republic. Veruska Natural Disaster History Haiti has a history of 57 natural disasters. Such as various earthquakes, hurricanes, cyclones, floods, and tropical storms. January 12 of 2010 Earthquake Hurricane Sandy 2012 Flood Cyclone Tropical Storm Issac 2012 Tectonic Setting Tectonic Plate Setting Lily Lily The Haitian earthquake had the magnitude of 7.0! The main plate to cause such a massive earthquake to strike was the Caribean. Population Most of the population in Haiti are poor. Many of the houses were shacks. 3.5 million people were affected by the earthquake, resulting 300 thousand people to get injured and 200 thousand dead. 188 thousand homes were destroyed and 4,000 schools wrecked. Joseph Past Response Joseph The past responses to the earthquake were that they would immediately ask for help from HDEC such as the USA and ask for them to help them clean the mess and also try to find missing people, they would also not give children any knowledge of what to do when a earthquake happens, which they shouldve because they live in a country that is based on a history with a lot of natural disasters, and they wouldnt take the time to teach some of their students the basics, and also most of the reactions of the people were to move out of the city or towns and move with a family that lived far from the city. they aslo provided free medical care, providing shelter to the homeless, improving water supplies, giving information on how to take care of an earthquake and giving tools and seeds to about 100,000 farmers. Lily Proposal for future responses For the future I am proposing to educate the people in Haiti’s schools. I think that this is important to do because then the children and teenagers will know all about earthquakes and how they happen, why they happen, what to do etc. They need to know all this because then they won’t be startled when it happens again and they will know why it is happening. We will make this happen by getting the schools to add it into their curriculum, you will get the word across to the schools by announcements to the county and the schools. As well as that we need to have monthly community and city earthquake drills. This should happen because then the people in Haiti will know what to do when the actual earthquake happens. To make this possible we will have an alarm that tells the community when they are having the drills. This goes as far as city drills to house, school, work etc. drills. The last thing that we need to take charge in is getting the good scientist and technology in Haiti. We need this because then we will know when the next earthquake will be. This will be very helpful because then it won’t be a surprise like the last one was. Bibliography ● ● ● ● "Tectonics of the Haitian Earthquake."Highly Allochthonous.
