3.5 – Organ Systems Working Together All your cells are organized into tissues, organs, and organ systems To keep your body healthy all of your systems must work together For example: Digestive system gets nutrients and circulatory system disperses the nutrients around the body Organ systems can be divided into 2 main groups: Supplies nutrients and removes waste Regulates the body There are 4 main systems in this group Respiratory System Circulatory System Digestive System Excretory System Look at Figure 1 on Page 78 Consists of the trachea, lungs, and blood vessels that are contained within the lungs Responsible for absorbing oxygen from the air and getting rid of carbon dioxide Oxygen is needed by all cells of the body to carry out cellular processes Carbon dioxide is produced as waste in the process The exchange of gases takes place in the blood vessels in the lungs These blood vessels connect the respiratory system to the circulatory system The respiratory system relies on the circulatory system to distribute the oxygen throughout the body and take the carbon dioxide back to the lungs Is made of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, and liver It is responsible for breaking down the food we eat and making the nutrients available to all the cells of the body This system also relies on the circulatory system to distribute the nutrients to the cells and to collect waste materials that are produced in the process Consists of the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra It collects waste from the bloodstream and excretes it as urine The kidneys act as filters through which the blood flows to be purified While filtering the waste, the kidneys also regulate the amount of water in the body The excretory system ensures that our bodies are not poisoned by the waste that is produced in cells The 2 main systems that regulate the body are: Endocrine System Nervous System The endocrine system produces hormones (chemical messengers) These hormones travel to other organs and tell them how to adjust to what is going on outside and inside the body The nervous system detects what is going on outside and inside the body and sends electrical messages throughout the body
