MATTHEW 24:21-28
THE COMING OF THE SON OF MAN
VS. 3
Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives,
the disciples came to Him privately,
saying, “Tell us, when will these things
be? And what will be the sign of Your
coming, and of the end of the age?”
When shall these things be?
What shall be the sign of your
coming?
And of the end of the age?
ISAIAH 46:9-10
“Remember the former things, those of
long ago; I am God, and there is no
other; I am God, and there is none like
me. I make known the end from the
beginning, from ancient times, what is
still to come. I say: My purpose will
stand, and I will do all that I please.”
DANIEL 12:1-2
“…There will be a time of distress such
as has not happened from the
beginning of nations until then. But at
that time your people—everyone whose
name is found written in the book—will
be delivered. Multitudes who sleep in
the dust of the earth will awake: some
to everlasting life, others to shame and
everlasting contempt.”
VS. 4
“Take heed that no one deceives you.”
23:37-39
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who
kills the prophets and stones those who
are sent to her! How often I wanted to
gather your children together, as a hen
gathers her chicks under her wings, but
you were not willing! See! Your house is
left to you desolate; for I say to you, you
shall see Me no more till you say,
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name
of the LORD!’ ”
VS. 21-22
"For then there will be great tribulation,
such as has not been since the
beginning of the world until this time, no,
nor ever shall be. And unless those days
were shortened, no flesh would be
saved; but for the elect's sake those
days will be shortened.”
LUKE 21:23-24
“There will be great distress in the land
and wrath against this people. They will
fall by the sword and will be taken as
prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem
will be trampled on by the Gentiles until
the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.”
REVELATION 6:15-17
“Then the kings of the earth, the princes,
the generals, the rich, the mighty, and
every slave and every free man hid in
caves and among the rocks of the
mountains. They called to the
mountains and the rocks, ‘Fall on us and
hide us from the face of him who sits on
the throne and from the wrath of the
Lamb! For the great day of their wrath
has come, and who can stand?’”
“God is ultimately in charge of
history and will not allow evil to
exceed the bounds He has set.”
Barton
22:14
“For many are called, but few are
(among the) chosen.”
MARK 13:20
“And unless the Lord had shortened
those days, no flesh would be saved;
but for the elect’s sake, whom He
chose, He shortened the days.”
1 PETER 1:1-2
“Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To
God’s elect, strangers in the world,
scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia,
Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, who
have been chosen according to the
foreknowledge of God the Father,
through the sanctifying work of the
Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and
sprinkling by his blood: Grace and
peace be yours in abundance…”
1PETER 2:9-10
“But you are a chosen people, a royal
priesthood, a holy nation, a people
belonging to God, that you may
declare the praises of Him who called
you out of darkness into his wonderful
light. Once you were not a people, but
now you are the people of God; once
you had not received mercy, but now
you have received mercy.”
"FOR THEN THERE WILL BE GREAT
TRIBULATION”
John 15:19 If you belonged to the world,
it would love you as its own. As it is, you
do not belong to the world, but I have
chosen you out of the world. That is why
the world hates you…
John 16:33 “These things I have spoken
to you, so that in Me you may have
peace. In the world you have
tribulation, but take courage; I have
overcome the world.”
2 TIMOTHY 3:12
Indeed, all who desire to live godly in
Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
VS. 23-26
"Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here
is the Christ!' or 'There!' do not believe it.
For false christs and false prophets will
rise and show great signs and wonders
to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
See, I have told you beforehand.
Therefore if they say to you, 'Look, He is
in the desert!' do not go out; or 'Look, He
is in the inner rooms!' do not believe it.”
VS. 4-5, 11
Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one
deceives you. For many will come in my
name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and
will deceive many…and many false
prophets will appear and deceive many
people.
2 THESSALONIANS 2:8-9
“Then that lawless one will be
revealed…that is, the one whose
coming is in accord with the activity of
Satan, with all power and signs and
false wonders”
1 CORINTHIANS 1:22-23
“Jews demand miraculous signs and
Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach
Christ crucified: a stumbling block to
Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.”
JOHN 16:13
“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes,
He will guide you into all the truth; for He
will not speak on His own initiative, but
whatever He hears, He will speak; and
He will disclose to you what is to come.”
1 JOHN 2:26-27
These things I have written to you
concerning those who are trying to
deceive you. As for you, the anointing
which you received from Him abides in
you, and you have no need for anyone
to teach you; but as His anointing
teaches you about all things, and is true
and is not a lie, and just as it has taught
you, you abide in Him.”
VS. 27-28
"For as the lightning comes from the
east and flashes to the west, so also will
the coming of the Son of Man be. For
wherever the carcass is, there the
eagles will be gathered together.”
TITUS 2:11-14
For the grace of God that brings
salvation has appeared to all men. 12 It
teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness
and worldly passions, and to live selfcontrolled, upright and godly lives in this
present age, 13 while we wait for the
blessed hope—the glorious appearing
of our great God and Savior, Jesus
Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us to
redeem us from all wickedness and to
purify for himself a people that are His
very own, eager to do what is good.
JAMES 5:7-9
“Be patient, then, brothers, until the
Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits
for the land to yield its valuable crop
and how patient he is for the autumn
and spring rains. You too, be patient
and stand firm, because the Lord’s
coming is near. Don’t grumble against
each other, brothers, or you will be
judged. The Judge is standing at the
door!”
MATTHEW 24
“God has not abandoned the world; for
all its wickedness, the world is still the
scene in which God’s purpose is being
worked out.”
They tell us that even a very crescendo
of evil must not discourage us. An
essential part of the Jewish picture of
the Day of the Lord is that a complete
breakdown of all moral standards and
an apparent complete disintegration of
the world must precede it. But, for all
that, this is not the prelude to
destruction; it is the prelude to recreation.
“They tell us that both judgment and a
new creation are certain. They tell us
that God contemplates the world both
in justice and in mercy; and that God’s
plan is not the obliteration of the world,
but the creation of a world which is
nearer to his heart’s desire.”
Barclay
