Integumentary
System
“The PROTECTOR!!!”
Functions of the
Integumentary System:
 Protects
internal organs/systems
 Protects against infectious organisms
 Prevents loss of body fluids
 Regulates body temperature
 Removes wastes – perspiration
 Generates Vitamin D – Sunlight
 Protects against sunburns
 Stores fat for fuel and insulation
 Sensory organ w/ receptors for touch,
pressure, pain, heat, and cold
Parts of the
Integumentary System
1.SKIN
2.HAIR
3.NAILS
***All form from dead cells which the body sheds as new
cells push up from underneath.
skin
1. Epidermis: Outside Layer


Produces Melanin--- Gives
skin its color and protects us
from UV rays.
Made up of keratin (protein)
2. Dermis:

3.



Contains nerve endings,
blood vessels, hair follicles,
sweat glands, oil glands.
Subcutaneous:
Made of fat and keeps us
warm.
Holds skin to tissues
Hair starts here.
Nails




Protects fingers and toes
Formed from keratin(protein)
and are tough and platelike
No nerve endings
Grow 1/10 of an inch per
month
Hair




Each hair grows out of a
follicle
Hairs are large columns of
dead cells which are filled
with protein called keratin
Hair color is determined by
amount of melanin in skin
100,000 follicles on your
head
