Romanticism
William Blake
The movement
• Resulting in part from the libertarian and
egalitarian ideals of the French Revolution, the
romantic movement was a revolt against the
prescribed rules of classicism. The basic aims of
romanticism were various: a return to nature and
to belief in the goodness of humanity; the
rediscovery of the artist as a supremely individual
creator; the development of nationalistic pride;
and the exaltation of the senses and emotions
over reason and intellect. In addition,
romanticism was a philosophical revolt against
rationalism.
• Blake was a nonconformist who associated with
some of the leading radical thinkers of his day
• He championed imagination over reason in the
creation of both his poetry and images, asserting
that ideal forms should be constructed not from
observations of nature but from inner visions. He
declared in one poem, "I must create a system or
be enslaved by another man's."
