PA STANDARDS & OBJECTIVES
STANDARDS
• 8.4.7.A: Summarize the
social, political, cultural, and
economic contributions of
individuals and groups in
world history.
OBJECTIVES
• Discuss the Visigoths and
their history
• Discuss the Ostrogoth's and
their history
• We discussed what is a barbarian
• Do you remember what the term barbarian
means?
• Let’s take a look at the next slide and see how
much you remember.
1. The term “barbarian” means all of these
except
A. Uncivilized
B. Non-Greek speaking person
C. Savage
D. A person who lives within the
Roman Empire
• As we discussed, the barbarians came from what
is now modern day Germany and other areas like
modern Poland, Hungary, The Czech Republic,
and elsewhere east of the Rhine River.
• Rome went out of its way to keep them out of the
empire.
• But as time went on and the Western Empire
weakened…the invasion began.
• Are the first group we are going to talk about.
• Who were the Visigoths (Vis-a-goths) and
where did they come from?
• Besides having one of the two coolest names
of the barbarian tribes (in my opinion), they
are the tribe that is best remembered fighting
Rome.
• We first hear of the Visigoths in 100 B.C. living in
what is today modern Poland.
• But weather and lack of food pushed them and
their cousins, The Ostrogoth’s (more on them
later), father south.
• They passed through modern day Slovakia and
settled along the Danube river. Beyond was Rome
and they dare not enter the empire!
VISIGOTHS
begin here
THE DANUBE
RIVER
1 .Where did the Visigoths originate?
A. Spain
B. Rome
C. France
D. Poland
2. Where did the Visigoths stop
A. Danube River
B. Seine River
C. Nile River
D. Yellow River
• The Visigoths settled along the Danube River
and became farmers and traded with the
Romans.
• Though they had contact with Rome, they
were not Roman citizens .
• But a threat from outside would drive the
Visigoths into Rome.
• The Huns (another group we will take about later
this week) began pushing the Visigoths, along
with other barbarian tribes across the Danube
River and into Rome.
• At first Rome accepted them so they could be
used as defense against other barbarian tribes.
• But the Romans mistreatment of them caused
the Visigoth army to march to Rome in 410 AD.
VISIGOTHS
CROSS INTO
ROME
IN 410 AD THE
VISIGOTH ARMY
MARCHES ON
ROME
• Though Rome was no longer the capital of the
Western Empire (the city of Ravenna had
replaced it) , it still was the symbol of Roman
power.
• Alaric (Al-a- Rick), the leader of the Visigoth
had invaded Rome twice before but this time,
the third time, Rome fell.
VISIGOTH
KINGDOM
UNIT 711 AD
VISIGOTHS
LEAVE
ROME
• The Visigoths moved into Spain where they ruled
until 711 A.D when the Muslim Moors from
North Africa invaded.
• Today people in Spain can claim Visigoth ancestry
along with Arab, Moor, and other European
powers.
• Let’s turn now to their cousins, the Ostrogoths.
3. What drove the Visigoths into Rome?
A. Gold
B. The Huns
C. Bad weather
D. The awesome garlic bread
TRUE or FALSE
In 410 AD the Visigoths sacked Rome under
Alaric.
The Visigoths then moved into what is now
Spain.
• Just like their cousins the Visigoths. The Ostrogoth’s
started out in Poland and then moved south.
• The Ostrogoth’s settled along the Black Sea and
became farmers.
• They traded with Rome but stayed outside of the
Empire.
• That is until the Huns arrived!
OSTROGOTHS
START HERE
SETTLE HERE
UNTIL 300
AD
• In 476 AD a Hun named Odoacer took charge of Rome and
sent a nasty letter to the Eastern Emperor that there was
no need for a western Emperor.
• Emperor Zeno in the East sent his buddies the Ostrogoth's
to kick out Odoacer and take back Rome.
• Unlike their cousins, the Visigoths, the Ostrogoth's loved
Roman culture and really wanted to be accepted by them.
• Under the Ostrogoth king, Theodoric, they took back Italy
and ruled well.
• After Theodoric died, the new Emperor of the
Eastern Empire, Justinian decided he wanted
Italy back .
• War was waged between the Ostrogoth’s and
the Eastern Empire for 20 years before the
Ostrogoth's were defeated and sent north into
Austria where they vanish from history in the
years following.
Settle in Southern
Austria then
vanish from
history

The Vandals.
