“Israel Present and God’s Salvation”
Romans 9:30-10:21 & Selected
Cross Creek Community Church, Pastor Dave Martin – August 30, 2015
Outer Banks, NC
Introduction
“Salvation” – Jesus means “Savior”,
He rescues and saves people from
the guilt, power and penalty of sin.
(Heb 2:3)
Jesus Rescues the Perishing
I. Israel’s Freedom to Choose
Romans 9:30-32 30 What then shall we say? That the Gentiles,
who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a
righteousness that is by faith; 31 but Israel, who pursued a law
of righteousness, has not attained it. 32 Why not? Because
they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They
stumbled over the "stumbling stone." [Jesus]
I. Israel’s Freedom to Choose
• People choose good works rather than faith, 9:30-33
Romans 9:32 32 Why not? Because they pursued
it not by faith but as if it were by works. They
stumbled over the "stumbling stone."
I. Israel’s Freedom to Choose
• People choose good works rather than faith, 9:30-33
• People choose self-righteousness rather than God’s, 10:1-15
Romans 10:3 3 Since they did not know the
righteousness that comes from God and sought
to establish their own, they did not submit to
God's righteousness.
I. Israel’s Freedom to Choose
• People choose good works rather than faith, 9:30-33
• People choose self-righteousness rather than God’s, 10:1-15
• People choose stubbornness rather than obedience, 10:16-21
Romans 10:21 21 But concerning Israel he says,
"All day long I have held out my hands to a
disobedient and obstinate people."
II. God’s Formula for Salvation
Romans 10:8-10 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you;
it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith
we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth,
"Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him
from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart
that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth
that you confess and are saved.
II. God’s Formula for Salvation
• Outward public confession, Jesus is Lord “kurios”… God!
9 That
if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord,"
II. God’s Formula for Salvation
• Outward public confession, Jesus is Lord “kurios”… God!
• Inward heart belief, in person & work of Christ… Justified!
and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,
you will be saved.
10 For
it is with your
heart that you believe
and are justified, and
it is with your mouth
that you confess and
are saved.
III. Everyone Freely Invited to Enjoy
Romans 10:12-13,17 12 For there is no difference between Jew
and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all
who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of
the Lord will be saved."… 17 Consequently, faith comes from
hearing the message, and the message is heard through the
word of Christ.
III. Everyone Freely Invited to Enjoy
• Jew, Gentile, man, women, rich, poor, moral, immoral…
12 For
there is no difference between Jew and
Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and
richly blesses all who call on him,
III. Everyone Freely Invited to Enjoy
• Jew, Gentile, man, women, rich, poor, moral, immoral…
• God provides salvation, we hear, we believe and are saved
13 for,
"Everyone who calls on the name of
the Lord will be saved."
Preaching the Good News
Romans 10:14-15 14 How, then,
can they call on the one they
have not believed in? And how
can they believe in the one of
whom they have not heard? And
how can they hear without
someone preaching to them? 15
And how can they preach unless
they are sent? As it is written,
"How beautiful are the feet of
those who bring good news!"
IV. Now What?
Matthew 28:18-20 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All
authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them
in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have
commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very
end of the age."
