United States Colored Troops Civil War Disagreement with allowing black men to represent the United States. USCT fought first skirmish against the Confederate at Island Mound, Missouri that October. USCT proved over and over again they were equal to the white in martial equality. Accounts of this appeared in The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, and Harpers Weekly. First union victory in which an African-American officer commanded African-American soldiers and won. Two months later after the Island Mound skirmish, the War Department integrated USCT in the Union Army. USCT integrated in Louisiana, South Carolina, and Virginia and elsewhere. USCT accounted for 10% of the Union Army. Approximately 180,000 black men volunteered. Many of the were former slaves. Nearly 40,000 gave their lives. Why did the whites have issues with the black men having rights to represent the US? What would have happened if black men were not allowed to join the Union Army? Do you think the Union Army made the right decision to allow colored troops to join? Why did black men decide to volunteer and join the army? Would you have volunteered and joined the USCT in the Union Army?
