Civil War
 Disagreement with allowing black men to
represent the United States.
 USCT fought first skirmish against the
Confederate at Island Mound, Missouri that
October.
 USCT proved over and over again they were
equal to the white in martial equality.
 Accounts of this appeared in The New York
Times, The Chicago Tribune, and Harpers
Weekly.
 First union victory in which an African-American
officer commanded African-American soldiers and
won.
 Two months later after the Island Mound skirmish,
the War Department integrated USCT in the
Union Army.
 USCT integrated in Louisiana, South Carolina, and
Virginia and elsewhere.
 USCT accounted for 10% of the Union Army.
 Approximately 180,000 black men
volunteered.
 Many of the were former slaves.
 Nearly 40,000 gave their lives.
 Why did the whites have issues with the black men




having rights to represent the US?
