OUR TARGETS Identify and explain how the bio unit connects to human behavior Identify and explain the strengths and weaknesses of the bio unit DO NOW• Watch video and do the following • Connection to the bio unit DO NOW• With your teaching groups identify the following with your study • Connection to the bio unit • How the study applies to human behavior • One strength and One weakness • Listen to Green’s Directions DO NOW• Take Notes on Review and Video GREEN HOUSEKEEPING • BIO UNIT TEST ON 11/16 • BIO LECTURE IS ON MY SWIFT PAGE • KEY CLUB MEETING DURING ADVISORY THIS WED SUCCESS CRITERIA- KNOW TWO PSYCH BIO STUDIES IN DETAIL TO MEET OR EXCEED STANDARD ON TEST. ATL- THINKING, COMMUNICATION AND RESEARCH LEARNER PROFILECOMMUNICATERS, KNOWLEDGEABLE, INQUIRERS AND CARING STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES OF BIOLOGICAL APPROACH STRENGTHS 1. We need to know the basis of what makes us tick. If we don’t then we cannot really claim to know anything about behavior at all. Some would claim that all behavior should be explained on a physiological level because all that we are is contained in our neural and hormonal reactions. 2. If we know the physiological basis of some aspects of behavior (e.g. depression) then we can treat the problem using drugs, which could solve the problem entirely if it’s simply a straightforward chemical imbalance. Plus, some aspects of physiology and anatomy are very useful when it comes to diagnosing brain damage etc. 3. Evolutionary theory can offer some neat explanations of behavior that would otherwise be inexplicable STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES OF BIOLOGICAL APPROACH STRENGTHS 4. The more we know about the brain, the more we should be able to explain how we tick: it is the seat of all our knowledge after all. WEAKNESSES 1. It’s reductionist, which leads to the following criticisms: (a) If someone comes to you with depression is it any use to them to tell them that their serotonin receptors are not functioning properly? (b) Mind/body problem 1: psychology has great influence on physiology (stress and illness) (c) Mind/body problem 2: sensation is not necessarily the same as perception (d) Consciousness: what is it, where is it and is it any use finding it? (e) What about free will? Biological approach advocates determinism STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES OF BIOLOGICAL APPROACH WEAKNESSES 2. Evolutionary approach has a number of problems: (a) Altruism: difficult to explain. Even sociobiologists come up with some very convoluted explanations. (b) Our developing cortex means that we rely less on instincts and more on “higher” processes. (c) Our behavior is very much socially and culturally determined. 3. Genes: Difficult to separate genes and environmental influences on behavior. ATL- THINKING, COMMUNICATION AND RESEARCH LEARNER PROFILE- COMMUNICATERS, KNOWLEDGEABLE, INQUIRERS AND CARING Behaviorism Test Results 1. Identify and explain the strength and limitations of the behaviorism perspective. Behavior is essential and common to all life. A strength to this perspective exists within its many aspects of conditioning, aversion, modeling, reinforcement and behavioral modification. Through various studies, it is proved that human behavior can be manipulated. For example certain objects, that is, infants mind was changed to ultimately fear every encounter with that specific object. This reinforces the overall idea that behavior can be controlled. Behaviorism is limited by the lack of human testing in all aspects. Because of ethical issues concerning experimentation of humans, behaviorism has been limited to the study of the behavior of animals. Although accurately translated into human behavior. Behaviorism is limited to ethical controversy. Total Score-11 (A-3 B-3 C-3) Behaviorism Test Results 3. Examine the ethical controversies related….. One method that issued ethical controversy was operant conditioning, specifically using punishment. It has been said negative reinforcement, which leads to punishment, can have negative effects. The most ethically controversial would be the fact that punishment could lead to increase aggression in the person being punished and later becomes the punisher. Another issue with punishment is the avoidance factor. This means that instead of the person’s behavior changing because of the punishment, they just learn to avoid the person who offers it. Both of these are ethical controversies related to punishment aspect of operant conditioning. ATL- THINKING, COMMUNICATION AND RESEARCH LEARNER PROFILE- COMMUNICATERS, KNOWLEDGEABLE, INQUIRERS AND CARING Behaviorism Test Results 4. Part A-Identify one research method Part B-give one strength… Part A-Is fear innate or is it learned? John B. Watson performed and experiment with a baby called Little Albert. Watson gave Albert a few different objects for him to play with. However one in particular white and fuzzy objects Watson would make a harsh sound whenever Little Albert attempted to touch them. Only with the one object would Watson make the harsh sound. In return, Little Albert learned to be afraid of fuzzy white objects. The experiment was unethical because Watson did not debrief little albert when the experiment was done. One strength for this method was Watson hypothesis was true. Fear was learned because before the noises, Little Albert wasn’t afraid of the fuzzy white things, but he was tuaght to be afraid of them. One limitation of the method was that Watson did not try his experiment on another person, which would back-up his findings.
