1-5 Adding Integers
Review:
Integers: Positive, negative whole numbers and
zero (no decimals or fractions)
New Material:
There are three parts to today's lesson:
Adding positive integers
Adding negative integers
Adding a positive integer and a negative integer
- Using the number line
- Using tiles
- Using the rules
I. Adding Positive Integers (Regular Addition)
1.) 9 + 15 =
2.) 3 + 12 =
3.) 17 + 2 + 3 =
II. Adding Negative Integers (Regular Addition)

3.) -1 + (-2) + (-3) =

III. Adding A Positive and A Negative Integer
B.) Using Tiles
You can use tiles to add integers.
means + 1
means -1
The zero principle states that when you add two opposites,
their sum is equal to zero.
(+1) + (-1) = 0
Solve each problem using the tiles.
Draw the tiles to help solve the problems.
5 + (-4) =
(-6) + 2 =
III. Adding One Positive and One Negative Integer
C.) Using the Rule
Rule:
Subtract the absolute values
the answer has the sign of the number
with the larger absolute value
1.) (-8) + 13 2.) 3 + (-19) 3.) 12 + (-4)
Practice:
1.) 16 + (-9) 2.) -9 + 13
3.) 5 + (-5) 4.) -2+ (-18)
5.) -22 + (-9) 6.) -7 + 28
7.) -27 + 13 8.) -19 + 27
9.) -23 + 31 10.) -5 + 31
Other Examples:
When adding many integers, try adding all the positive or negative
integers first. Then add the two
numbers.
1.) -7 + 14 + (-3)
2.) 13 + (-6) + (-12)
3.) -4 + (-9) + (-5) + 12
5.) -2 + (-13) + (-5)
4.) -14 + 22 + 2
6.) 116 + (-119) + (-8)
