Why do we care about the layers?
• The different layers are essential to human
survival.
• We need to be aware of how our actions in
the troposphere affect the other layers of the
atmosphere.

this layer

The Troposphere
•Lies next to the
Earth’s surface
•Densest atmospheric
level (because gravity
pushes down on it the
most)
•Almost all gases,
pollution and life
found here

this layer
•Air pressure is lower than
troposphere
•Temperature goes up as
you go higher

Stratosphere
•Air is very thin
• There is almost no
moisture in this layer so
it’s very dry
* inside the
stratosphere
* Contains ozone which
absorbs sun rays and
keeps us from overheating

•Air pressure is lower than
stratosphere
•This is the coldest layer
of the atmosphere
The Mesosphere
• Coldest layer
• As altitude increases , temperature decreases
• Very windy

The Thermosphere

(BUT IT IS NOT HOT).
*This is because the
particles are moving fast but
do not touch.

makes gases

Northern and
Southern Lights
