Layers and components of Earth’s atmosphere.
Teacher: Mr. Cardenas
Subject: Earth Science (11th-12th)
Date: 08/24/2015
Standards:
Strand 1: Inquiry Process
Concept 2: Record observations, notes, sketches, questions, and ideas using tools such as journals, notebook,
or computer.
Objectives (Explicit):
Students will be able to distinguish the five main layers of the Earth’s atmosphere and its components by taking notes
on their notebook.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):
Students will take notes based on the lecture and video and will complete a worksheet.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):

What? Students will watch a short film that introduces the five main layers of the Earth’s atmosphere.
Moreover, students will take notes based on today’s lecture.
 How? Students will use their notebook and record notes.
 Why? The atmosphere is what makes life possible on Earth and it protects all living organisms from the
ultraviolet rays and radiation from the sun.
Materials/Technology Resources to be Used:
Key vocabulary:
Atmosphere: Thin layer of air between Earth and Space.
Troposphere: Closest layer to the Earth’s surface.

Tropopause: Boundary between troposphere and
stratosphere.
Stratosphere: Contains the Ozone layer.

Stratopause
Mesosphere: Lowe part of the lonosphere.

mesopause
Thermosphere: Upper part of the lonosphere.
1. Notebook
2. Pen/pencil

thermopause
Exosphere: Farthest layer from the Earth’s surface.
Opening (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life)
Students will complete the brain exercise.
Students will watch an introductory video that talks about the Earth’s atmosphere and its five main layers.
Independent Practice
Guided
Practice
Instructional Input
Video: https://youtu.be/qW5xp64AiRs
Teacher Will: Play a short video that introduces the
main layers of the Earth’s atmosphere.
Student Will: Take notes, and ask questions.
Differentiation

Provide visuals (video)
Teacher Will: Lecture and explain the layers of the
atmosphere in depth.
Student Will: Take notes in their notebook and
ask questions if needed.
Teacher Will: Walk around and answer any
students’ question. Help the students if needed it.
Student Will: Work on a worksheet and turn it in
at the end of class.
Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation



Provide extra help.
If there is time, students will compare their answers with a partner.
Provide additional time.
Closing/Student Reflection/Real-life connections:
Students will work individually and complete a worksheet and turn it in for credit. Expectation: Students
must have 90%-100% completion of the worksheet.
Real-life connection: The Earth’s atmosphere is what prevents high energy solar radiation to reach the
surface and it allows life to flourish. The atmosphere is divided into five main layers: Troposphere,
Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere and Exosphere.
