Percent of a Number (
C)
Unit 9 Lesson 9
At restaurants, people leave a
percent of the total bill as a tip
to show appreciation of the
server. Another percent that
people pay is sales tax. It is a
percent of the total cost of a
purchase. In this lesson, you
will learn how to calculate tips
and taxes.
Facts about tips:
• A tip is money paid to workers to show satisfaction for their
service.
• Another word for tip is gratuity. Tips are paid to people who
provide services such as cutting hair or serving meals.
• A tip is usually a percent of the cost of the service. Many
people consider 15% of the cost of the service a reasonable
tip, although tips can be less than or greater than 15%.
• Whatever percent is used, the tip is calculated based on the
cost of the service.
Dan and his uncle have breakfast at a diner. The cost for
breakfast is $12. They want to leave a 15% tip. How much
money should the tip be?
• Finding a tip is just like finding the percent of a number!
.15 x 12 =
The cost of a haircut is $30. Mrs. Sanchez wants to give a
15% tip. How much money should the tip be?
The bill for lunch for four is $52. This group of friends
wants to give a 20% tip. How much money should the tip
be?
Facts about Taxes:
• Buyers pay sales tax to a government when they buy an item.
• Sales tax is a percent of a dollar. Different governments set
different sales tax percents, so sales tax percents, or rates, vary
from state to state and city to city.
• To find the amount of sales tax you need to pay, a store will
multiply the sales tax percent by the dollar amount of your
purchase.
• You pay the amount of the purchase plus the sales tax.
Janelle bought a pair of shoes for $29. The sales tax
is 4%. How much sales tax will Janelle pay?
• Finding a sales tax amount is just like finding the percent of a
number.
• Write 4% as a decimal number and multiply by the shoe price.
0.04 × 29 = 1.16
The price of a sweatshirt is $20. The sales tax is 10%.
What is the cost of the tax?
