 War of 1812: a war between America and Britain beginning
in 1812
 There were four main causes of the war:
-impressments
-expansion
-economics
-nationalism
Impressments
 Impressments: kidnapping American sailors to work on
British or French ships
 Why?
-Great Britain and France became involved in a war beginning
in 1803
-the USA was neutral (not on either side), but the French and
British took American supplies and sailors to use in their war

Economics
 Embargo: putting a stop to trade with a certain country
 Embargo Act (1807): banned the trade between American
merchants to the British and French

Expansion
 America wanted to grow (expand) westward
 Native Americans did not want the Americans to take their
land, so they joined with the British
 British supplied the Native Americans with weapons
